NYU School of Medicine Renamed NYU Robert I. Grossman School of Medicine
In a surprise announcement during NYU Langone Health’s annual Violet Ball, Elaine Langone and her husband, Kenneth G. Langone, chair of the board of trustees of NYU Langone Health, informed the attendees that NYU School of Medicine will be renamed NYU Robert I. Grossman School of Medicine in honor of the current dean of the school. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Faculty Elected to National Academy of Medicine
The National Academy of Medicine announced that three members of the CUIMC faculty-Charles C. Branas from the Mailman School of Public Health and Rui Costa and Anil K. Rustgi from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons-have been elected to the academy. Members of NAM, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, are elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding achievement. Membership is one of the highest honors bestowed in the field of medicine. This year, 100 new members, including 10 international members, were elected to the academy. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Enrichment Program Receives 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award
Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s pipeline program for middle and high school students has received a 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The Einstein Enrichment Program, or EEP, was among 50 programs around the nation to receive the award for efforts to inspire young people from underrepresented minority groups to consider science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers through mentoring, academic and professional support, hands-on activities, and research opportunities. Albert Einstein College of Medicine and CUNY School of Public Health Collaborate to Offer Medical Students M.D./M.P.H. Program
Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (CUNY SPH) announced an agreement today to offer Einstein medical students an opportunity to complete a five-year program resulting in a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Einstein and a Master’s Degree in Public Health (M.P.H.) degree from CUNY SPH. Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo now Offers an Undergraduate Neuroscience Major
Starting this semester, undergraduates at the University at Buffalo with an interest in neuroscience can major in it. The new program, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree, was developed as a collaboration between the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB and the College of Arts and Sciences. New York Medical College Shines a Spotlight on Autism
Enriching medical students’ understanding of accessibility constraints in health care, the New York Medical College Office of Academic Support hosted Spotlight on Autism on October 24, part of the Accessibility Awareness and Education Lecture Series. The lecture featured keynote speaker, Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H. FAAN, FAES, School of Medicine associate dean of student affairs and associate professor of neurology, and Paul Morris, assistant in the NYMC Office of Human Resources, who is also an avid advocate for Autism awareness. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Law and Medical Students Join Forces in National Mock-Trial Competition
Ten law schools competed in three preliminary rounds of a fictitious civil trial involving dueling medical experts. Each law school was assigned a fourth-year student from the Zucker School of Medicine to serve as an expert witness. Opening rounds were held at the Nassau County Supreme Court with closing rounds held at Hofstra Law’s Weitz & Luxenberg Trial Courtroom. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem Gives Back to Harlem With Free ‘Fall into Health Fair’
Joining the Harlem community at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) and Pharmacy “Fall into Health Fair” Friday was NYS Assembly Member Inez Dickens. Close to 50 members of the Harlem community attended the two-hour fair at Touro on 125th St. across from the Apollo Theater. They received free flu shots and screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, BMI, vision, hearing, bone density, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: MD-PhD Student Research Aimed at Improving Patient Care
Graduate student Ben Schrank’s paper in Nature started with a hunch. Schrank, a student in Columbia’s MD-PhD program, and his mentor Jean Gautier, PhD, were looking for new proteins that might be involved in DNA repair. “If you’re able to inhibit DNA repair, you could make cancer treatments more effective,” Schrank explains. New York Medical College’s School of Medicine, Class of 2023 Marks Medical School Milestone: The White Coat Ceremony
The largest class of medical students in the history of New York Medical College -the School of Medicine Class of 2023–celebrated its White Coat Ceremony on October 28, at the Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York. More than 1,000 guests watched as 217 first-year medical students processed into the auditorium and onto the stage– thus began the right-of-passage ceremony, considered the symbolic beginning of the four-year journey of medical school and entry into the medical profession. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell Honors new Colleagues in Medicine
The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell presented new medical students with white coats at a special ceremony held at the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater in the John Cranford Adams Playhouse at Hofstra University on October 11, 2019. It is the medical school’s ninth class to embark on this traditional rite of passage into a career in medicine. Comprised of 103 students, the Zucker School of Medicine Class of 2023 is a blend of socio-economic backgrounds, including nearly 50 women and 20 ethnically underrepresented in medicine. Learn more.

Tanzania, one of Africa’s largest countries with a population of almost 55 million, has only one cancer treatment center in Dar es Salaam with limited resources. B.S./M.D. Program students from the CUNY School of Medicine at The City College of New York are helping patients of the Ocean Road Cancer Institute fight cancer using their research skills. Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Dean and Renowned Hematologist Elected to New York Genome Center Board of Directors
Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine and Senior Vice President of Health Sciences at Stony Brook University, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the New York Genome Center (NYGC). An internationally recognized physician-scientist, hematologist, medical educator and biomedical researcher, Dr. Kaushansky has led Stony Brook Medicine since 2010 and has championed promoting the biomedical and translational sciences on Long Island and throughout New York State and the region. Albany Medical College Bioethicist Named to BBC 100 Women List
Lisa Campo-Engelstein, Ph.D., associate professor of bioethics at the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College, has been named to the British Broadcasting Corporation’s ‘100 Women’ list, a selection of influential and inspirational women from around the world. Dr. Campo-Engelstein was a featured speaker at the “BBC 100 Women: The Female Future” symposium on Oct. 17 in London, which was broadcast globally and offered perspectives on what the world will look like in 2030.
