Andrea Califano, MD, and Jordan Orange, MD, PhD, of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine for their contributions to medical science, health care, and public health. Founded by Congress in 1863, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is one of three private, non-profit institutions created to provide objective advice to the U.S. government on matters of science, technology, and health. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Cooper Union Announce Student Exchange and Collaborative Research Program
The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) and the Albert Nerken School of Engineering at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art today announced an academic agreement that includes collaboration on research and academic programs, effective immediately. Through this agreement, matriculated ISMMS doctoral students and Cooper Union students will each be able to take courses at the other institution, with the first registration opportunity in November 2018 for courses in 2019. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Launches Master’s Program in Genetic Counseling

New York Medical College Class of 2022 Robes Up for White Coat Ceremony
On October 22, in a theater filled with nearly 1,000 guests, 202 first-year medical students, with pristine white coats in hand, processed on stage. Thus began the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2022 White Coat Ceremony, the rite of passage which marks medical students’ entrance into the medical profession. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: First-Year Students Mark the Start of Their Medical Careers at White Coat Ceremony
Nearly 100 first-year students of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell were presented with short white coats at a special ceremony held at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse at Hofstra University on Oct. 12. This year marks the eighth class from the Zucker School of Medicine to embark on a traditional rite of passage that recognizes the beginning of a career in medicine. Learn more.

University of Rochester President Richard Feldman has announced the appointment of Mark B. Taubman, M.D., to a new term as dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, effective July 1, 2019. Taubman will also continue his joint responsibilities as senior vice president for University Health Sciences, and CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and UR Medicine, the University’s health care network. University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: Messing Honored for Career of Innovation and Leadership in Urological Care
Leading researchers and clinicians from across the globe gathered in Rochester on October 18-19 to recognize the career of Edward Messing, M.D., F.A.C.S., and his 35 years of accomplishments in improving care for individuals with bladder, kidney, prostate, and testicular cancer. The Festschrift honoring Messing, a professor in the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Department of Urology and the Wilmot Cancer Institute, was the subject of a special edition of the journal Bladder Cancer. Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Weiler NICU Benefits From Student Drives to Provide Books and Baby Goods
This past spring, through a collaborative effort among Einstein’s Pediatrics Interest Group, its chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), and NICU Cuddling Club, members of the Einstein community donated approximately 500 children’s books and $175 to a special children’s book drive that supported staff at Weiler Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in providing books to families of newborns. And through October 25, 2018, the same student groups have teamed to hold a baby-goods drive, to collect baby goods such as diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, baby clothes and receiving blankets that will be useful to the tiny infants’ families. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Receives Seven Year Accreditation
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) with campuses in Harlem and in Middletown, New York, has received seven years of continued accreditation from The AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), Dr. Kenneth Steier, TouroCOM Executive Dean announced. The COCA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the accreditor of colleges of osteopathic medicine. COCA’s ruling signifies that a college has met or exceeded the Commission’s standards for educational quality. Learn more.

Albany Med is one of only 21 hospitals in New York State, the sole hospital in the Capital Region, and one of just 248 hospitals in the nation to receive this recognition for using healthcare information technology (IT) to improve the delivery and management of care. Blessed with good health, Ms. Baumel defies the stereotype of an octogenarian. While some doctors might advise any patient pushing 90 to slow down, her Montefiore physician, Amy R. Ehrlich, M.D., expects healthy, vibrant seniors to live life to the fullest. So when Ms. Baumel proudly announced she was taking a fitness class, Dr. Ehrlich cheered, but suggested going even more often-say, three times a week. “Some people you can never satisfy,” Ms. Baumel says affectionately.
