New York’s Medical Schools Add 2,424 Future Doctors to the Pipeline
The Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY) reported that 2,424 new medical students enrolled this fall in the state’s 16 medical schools – an enrollment increase of 120 since last year. Of the incoming class, 47 percent are women and three percent are international students. More than half of matriculating students are New York State residents.

Devry Lures Medical School Rejects as Taxpayers Fund Debt
Students who attend Devry’s two for-profit medical schools incur high levels of debt while many often fail to graduate or obtain a residency position in the U.S. Though neither school is accredited by the body that approves U.S. medical programs, their students are still eligible for loans by the U.S. Education Department.

Touro Dean Elected President of the Organization of State Medical Association Presidents
September 16, 2013 – Robert B. Goldberg, DO, dean and professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in New York City, has been named president of the Organization of State Medical Association Presidents (OSMAP).
Prior to becoming OSMAP president, Dr. Goldberg was president of the Medical Society of the State of New York from 2007 to 2008. Dr. Goldberg has been a practicing physician and medical educator for more than 25 years. He has taught at TouroCOM since the school’s inception in 2007 and has served as dean since 2008.
Columbia Creates Fast-Track MD for PhD Scientists
September 12, 2013 – “Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons has launched a three-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program for PhD-trained biological scientists. The accelerated curriculum prepares graduates for physician-scientist careers that combine their knowledge of fundamental biomedical science with an understanding of how diseases and their treatments affect humans.”

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Names Dean of New Campus in Middletown
August 16, 2013 – Touro College and University System President and CEO Dr. Alan Kadish announced the appointment of Kenneth J. Steier, DO, MBA, MPH, MHA, MGH as Campus Dean for the new Middletown campus of Harlem-based Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM). The campus is scheduled to open in August 2014 and is expected to enroll more than 500 students when fully operational.

Majority of New Faculty Hires Have Ties to UB Medical School
September 13, 2013 – More than half of the new faculty at UB’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences are graduates of the school or its training programs. Of the 29 faculty who have joined the school in the past several months, 15 have completed fellowships, residencies, medical or doctoral degrees at UB.

Groundbreaking Set for New University at Buffalo Medical School
September 11, 2013 – “Visible construction work is taking place at the future site of the University at Buffalo’s $375 million medical school, and a formal groundbreaking has been set. UB will aim to complete construction by the fall of 2016. The new building will coincide with an increase in class size to 180 from about 140 each year, meaning about 720 students will call it home at any given time. Full-time faculty is expected to increase to 850 from 715.”

Anatomy Courses Crucial for Physician Training
September 5, 2013 – Hands-on experience is crucial for medical students to learn about human anatomy. The Anatomical Donor Program at Columbia provides first-year students with bodies on which to do dissections and, in doing so, to learn crucial information that a book can never teach.

Cardiovascular Associates of New York in Queens Joins NYU Langone Medical Center as Newest Faculty Group Practice
September 3, 2013 – “Cardiovascular Associates of New York in Queens, Manhattan and Nassau County, has joined NYU Langone Medical Center as its newest Faculty Group Practice. As part of the relationship, cardiologists at NYU Langone Cardiovascular Associates have been appointed to the faculty of NYU School of Medicine and granted admitting privileges at NYU Langone.”

North Shore-LIJ Helps New Queens High School Launch EMT Program
August 30, 2013 – The new Institute of Health Professions (The Institute) at Cambria Heights welcomes its inaugural class this year. The curriculum has a strong focus on technical education and science, also including a component on career-readiness training in the healthcare professions. North Shore-LIJ, one of the school’s partners, will focus on a program to help train students to become emergency medical technicians (EMTs).

Accomplished Musician Begins Osteopathic Medical Education at NYIT
August 27, 2013 – Veronika Blinder, a 25 year old first-year student at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, devoted 22 years of her life to practicing and performing the cello. While she always knew she wanted to be a doctor, Blinder continued musical studies and pursued a minor in music at Wellesley, where she majored in biology.

Aided by Grant, Upstate to Develop Professionalism Training Program for Medical Residents
August 27, 2013 – Upstate Medical University has received a $50,000 national grant to further develop an Upstate program, “Learning to TALK (Treat All Like Kin),” aimed at improving communication skills and professionalism for medical residents. The grant was awarded by the Josiah Macy Foundation and Institute on Medicine as a Profession.

September 9, 2013 – With a $25 million gift from Herbert and Florence Irving, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center opened its new Irving Radiation Oncology Center. The facility provides leading-edge precision radiation therapies and the most advanced diagnostic imaging for children and adults with cancer.

School-Based Health Center Opens on Frederick Douglass Campus
September 9, 2013 – The new School-Based Health Center is supported by the City School District, the University of Rochester School of Nursing and the University of Rochester Medical Center. Its aim is to improve the health and well-being of young people who reside in one of the most vulnerable sections of the city in terms of poverty and violence, and who have very limited access to health care.

URMC Plans Construction of New Building to Expand Imaging, Autism Care
September 4, 2013 – The University of Rochester Medical Center has submitted an application to the New York State Department of Health to construct a $28.4 million, three-story building to relocate outpatient imaging and some pediatric outpatient care, also provide convenient access for autism services for children.

NYU Langone Opens State-of-the-Art Hyperbaric and Advanced Would Healing Center
August 22, 2013 – NYU Langone Medical Center announces the opening of the new Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Hyperbaric and Advanced Wound Healing Center. One of only two Hyperbaric Centers in Manhattan providing treatment to patients with chronic non-healing wounds, patients now have access to surgical and non-surgical expertise within one location.
