Interview on AMSNY’s Diversity in Medicine Programs

In an interview with Susan Arbetter of The Capitol Pressroom, Jo Wiederhorn, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY), discussed the importance of diversity in medicine.

AMSNY’s programs have been very successful in helping under-represented minority students pursue careers in medicine. Ms. Wiederhorn emphasized how these pipeline programs help to ensure that the physician workforce in New York reflects the diverse background and culture of the state’s population.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Educates About Pulmonary Hypertension

November 6, 2013 – Health care professionals came together from around the New York metropolitan area recently for a forum on pulmonary hypertension, a relatively common but often overlooked disease, to learn more about early detection and prevention.

Med Students, Health Sciences Library and Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District Host Health Education Fair

Albany Med Receives Joint Commission Certification for Heart Pump Program

November 26, 2013 – Albany Medical Center, the first hospital in the region to provide mechanical heart pump implants for critically ill patients, is now the only hospital in the region to be recognized for the high quality of its implant program by The Joint Commission, the nation’s preeminent monitor of hospital quality.

Radiation Therapists Ease Cancer Treatments for Children by Decorating Protective Masks

November 14, 2013 – Radiation therapists at North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Department of Radiation Medicine have been easing children’s anxiety and fear of protective treatment masks by painting them, according to a child’s preference, with the faces of superheroes or other characters. A collection of the painted masks is now on display at the Hofstra North-LIJ School of Medicine.

Detecting and Treating Silent Heart Disease: New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College Launch New Institute of Cardiovascular Imaging

November 12, 2013 – To help reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease, the nation’s leading killer, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College have created the Dalio Institute of Cardiovascular Imaging. Raymond T. Dalio, a life trustee of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, has made a gift of $20 million through his Dalio Foundation in support of the institute.

NYU Langone Medical Center Earns “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures” Recognition from the Joint Commission

November 5, 2013 – NYU Langone Medical Center has been recognized by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America, as a 2012 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for exemplary performance using evidence-based clinical processes that improve care for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgery.
