Touro College Celebrates Grand Opening of New Medical School Campus in Middletown
September 4, 2014 – Marking a major milestone for Middletown, Orange County and the Hudson Valley, Harlem-based Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Sunday celebrated the grand opening of its new campus in Middletown, as 135 students comprising the Inaugural Class of 2018 donned white coats and took the Osteopathic Oath in the White Coat Ceremony, signifying the official start of their careers as medical students.

NYU College of Dentistry’s Dr. Maureen McAndrew Receives Prestigious Award from American Dental Association
July 15, 2014 – New York University College of Dentistry’s (NYUCD’s) Dr. Maureen McAndrew, Clinical Professor of Cariology and Comprehensive care and Senior Director of Professional Development, has been awarded the 2014 American Dental Association (ADA) Golden Apple Award for Inspiring Careers in Dental Education.

Stethoscope Donation Program a Thumping Success
September 5, 2014 – The tradition of donating stethoscopes to new students is still young at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons but has been embraced by the school’s alumni. “The response is fantastic,” says Elizabeth Williams, director of alumni relations. “We currently have more alumni who want to donate than we have students.”
Most members of the Class of 2018—who recently picked up their stethoscopes—probably don’t know how to use them, though at least one connoisseur was present. After seeing the box, she exclaimed, “Oh! It’s the Cardiology III!”

New Seminar Paves the Way for Collaborative Care
September 5, 2014 – Collaborative practice and a team-based approach to care are rapidly becoming hallmarks of America’s changing health care system. The Affordable Care Act and recommendations by organizations such as the Institute of Medicine are ensuring that providers from diverse professional backgrounds address the increasingly complex needs of their patients by practicing in coordinated health care teams to help improve outcomes and streamline health care services.

James McKiernan Named Urology Chair at Columbia University Medical Center and Urologist-in-Chief at NY-Presbyeterian Hospital/Columbia
September 9, 2014 – James McKiernan, MD, the George F. Cahill Professor of Urology, has been named chair of the Department of Urology of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and urologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. As department chair, he will be nominated to become the John K. Lattimer Professor of Urology.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center Appoints New Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
September 3, 2014 – SUNY Downstate Medical Center has appointed Shivakumar Vignesh, MD, as associate professor and chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and program director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship.
Dr. Vignesh is a superbly trained interventional gastroenterologist with expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures and endoscopic oncology. He is an expert in endoscopic ultrasound; pancreatic-biliary endoscopy; endoscopic ablation; and resection techniques for precancerous abnormalities of the GI tract, including early esophago-gastric cancer and large colorectal adenomas. Dr.Vignesh is also experienced in conducting clinical trials to evaluate novel endoscopic devices and diagnostic biomarkers, as well as in developing innovative GI curriculums for students, residents, and fellows. While at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, Dr. Vignesh directed a unique Advanced Endoscopic Oncology fellowship and designed a rigorous curriculum that offered training in advanced endoscopic procedures focusing on gastrointestinal cancers.
