Downstate’s University Hospital of Brooklyn Receives 2014 Press Ganey Commitment to Excellence Award for Continuous Improvement in Patient Experience
November 12, 2014 – SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s University Hospital of Brooklyn has been named a 2014 Commitment to Excellence Award winner by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. The Commitment to Excellence Award recognizes healthcare organizations that achieved continuous improvement in Patient Experience during a two-year span. The recognition is awarded annually to 20 organizations.

Junior High Students Learn at Mount Sinai Through Hands-on Experience
November 6, 2014 – One hospital is trying to get young teens interested in medicine, and it begins with the scalpel. Some junior high school students got a chance to dissect sheep brains as part of a program that’s inspiring would-be doctors. It’s not exactly your typical day at school but these 7th and 8th graders are spending the day at Mount Sinai Medical Center for an up close look at what life might be like as a medical student.

“Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology, Sixth Edition” Edited by Dr. Edward Halperin, Receives Book Award From British Medical Association
November 3, 2014 – Touro College and University System is pleased to announce that “Principles and Practice of Radiation Oncology, Sixth Edition,” a comprehensive reference work on cancer treatment, co-authored and edited by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., chancellor and CEO of New York Medical College (NYMC), was “highly commended” by the British Medical Association (BMA) at the organization’s 2014 Medical Book Awards ceremony in London on Sept. 22.

“Road Map to College” Conference for Parents
November 7, 2014 – Diversity in medical schools depends in part on diversity in undergraduate colleges. For high school students who do not have the advantage of parents or guardians experienced in navigating the college application process, the “Road Map to College” conference at Columbia University Medical Center helped parents learn about various colleges, the college application process, scholarships and other financial aid, help available to ease a student’s transition to college, and programs that help students explore career paths during college.

Me Too Monologues: Students Tell Personal Stories About Identity
November 6, 2014 – Race, gender, sexual orientation: Identity affects experience in ways that are as universal as they are personal. That is the theory behind the “Me Too Monologues,” a performance organized by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and inspired by a regular series of the same name that originated at Duke University.

SUNY Downstate’s Dr. Helen Durkin to Receive 2014 Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Honor is Given to Professors Who Inspire Their Students to Make a Difference
October 20, 2014 – Helen G. Durkin, PhD, associate professor of pathology and medicine and scientific director of the Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is one of ten professors nationwide to receive the 2014 Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award, which recognizes educators who have inspired a former student to establish on a lasting basis a concept or procedure of benefit to the community at large. This award will be presented to Dr. Durkin at a ceremony in Atlanta in November, and includes a monetary award of $25,000.

Montefiore Opens One of Region’s Largest Ambulatory Surgery Centers
November 10, 2014 – Today, Montefiore Health System, the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, opened its new Hutchinson Campus – a 12-story, 280,000 square-foot multi-specialty care center that offers New Yorkers the latest in ambulatory medicine. Montefiore’s new campus is one of the largest ambulatory surgery centers in the New York metropolitan region.

Pediatric Cancer and Stem Cell Transplant Patients to Benefit from New Wellness and Survivorship Program
October 31, 2014 – In an effort to build a stronger support system for pediatric cancer and stem cell transplant survivors, the Children and Adolescent Cancer and Blood Diseases Center of Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, in association with New York Medical College, is launching a new Wellness and Survivorship Program for pediatric patients and their families.
