The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has been awarded the prestigious Arnold Gold Foundation’s “Outstanding” ranking, in recognition of the school’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) and its work throughout the school year. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Three CUIMC Faculty Members Elected to National Academies
Angela Christiano, PhD, Molly Przeworski, PhD, and Lorraine S. Symington, PhD, were elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Przeworski also was elected this month to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, which recognizes and celebrates excellence of scientists, artists, scholars, and leaders in the public, non-profit, and private sectors. SUNY Upstate Medical UniversityStudents’ Effort Helps Homeless During Pandemic
A group of Upstate Medical University students has taken on the task of assisting the homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic. Summer Carbone, a medical student at Upstate Medical University College of Medicine, with materials gathered for distribution to homeless individuals to help them cope during the COVID-19 outbreak. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Students Launch “iPads to Hospitals” to Connect COVID-19 Patients and Families
Three College of Medicine Students at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, a dedicated COVID-19 facility, have organized “iPads to Hospitals”, a not-for-profit effort to acquire new and used iPads to donate to hospitals to help COVID-19 patients can communicate with family members and friends. “It is heartbreaking to hear stories of patients who are not able to have contact with their family or loved ones,” said Shenara Musthaq, SUNY Downstate College of Medicine Class of 2021. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Medical Center Students Find Ways to Volunteer
Students from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons have formed the COVID-19 Student Service Corps, or CSSC, to help fellow health professionals during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem: Healing in the Epicenter
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to upend lives throughout New York City, a TouroCOM alumna steps up to support her fellow healthcare heroes on the front lines. Dr. Gayatri Malhotra-Gupta, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Harlem Class of 2017, wanted to do something to help, and she also wanted to lift her own spirits. With her experience and contacts, she launched the wellness project on April 5th with a gofundme page that quickly met and surpassed her $5,000 goal to finance 750 care packages – or “wellness bags” – for NYC’s resident doctors fighting the pandemic. Despite not being able to gather together in a large group, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences wants to extend a warm welcome to its incoming class of residents and fellows. To that end, the school will be providing welcome bags at its orientations for 194 new residents June 22-26 and for 51 PGY-2 residents and fellows on July 1. Learn more.

New York Medical College: Members of the SOM Class of 2020 Graduate Early and Enter the Fight Against COVID-19
On April 8, a month ahead of schedule, more than 100 students from the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2020 graduated early, beginning their medical careers early to provide much needed medical support to the over-taxed hospitals facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Paving the way for this historic event, on April 4, New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo publicly announced his approval for the early graduation plan, thus allowing all eligible medical students from the Class of 2020, throughout the entire State, to graduate early, should they wish to do so. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University’s First Ever “Virtual Commencement” to Confer Diplomas to 37 Early Graduates of the College of Medicine
With the ongoing concern about the spread of COVID-19 and with the State of New York still on pause and continuing social distancing precautions, SUNY Downstate will celebrate the early graduation of 37 College of Medicine students with a “Virtual Commencement” ceremony that will be live-streamed on Friday, May 1 at 3:00 PM. An additional 158 College of Medicine graduates, along with more than 500 graduates from SUNY Downstate’s College of Nursing, School of Public Health, School of Health Professions, and the School of Graduate Studies, will have the opportunity to participate in a similar virtual commencement on May 20, 2020. Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Early Medical School Graduates Begin Clinical Work at Montefiore Hospitals
On Friday, April 17, more than 100 Einstein fourth-year medical students graduated a month early so they could begin working in various hospitals on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Among them were 33 newly-minted doctors who elected to remain at Montefiore to assist the Medicine teams treating COVID-19 patients at the Moses, Weiler, and Wakefield hospitals. Learn more.

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: Medical School Awards Diplomas to 147 Graduates

Fourth-year osteopathic medical students typically graduate in May, taking well-deserved time to decompress, travel, or spend time with family before their residencies begin on July 1. This spring will be drastically different for the Class of 2020, many of whom have chosen to graduate early and assist in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). On April 15, eligible medical students from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) graduated early in support of Governor Cuomo’s Emergency Orders to allow the state’s fourth-year medical students to receive physician licenses upon graduation. Ian DeAndrea-Lazarus, M.D. and Ph.D. candidate in the Medical Scientist Training Program, was awarded the distinguished Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health Related Research (F31) from the National Center for Deafness and Communication Disorders. Ian DeAndrea-Lazarus, M.D. and Ph.D. candidate in the Medical Scientist Training Program. This fellowship will support DeAndrea-Lazarus’ research using electroencephalography (EEG) that compares the effect that deafness and early access to sign language has on visuospatial attention in people who are deaf. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai student Sherman Leung is among 30 recipients-out of 2,211 applicants-to be named a 2020 Paul & Daisy Soros New Americans Fellow. The program recognizes outstanding immigrants and children of immigrants pursuing graduate studies in the United States who have the potential to make significant contributions to the nation through their work. When COVID-19 started to spread in the United States, siblings Karen Tsai, MD ’17 and Kevin Tsai, MD ’19 leapt into action. Both graduates of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, the young doctors knew they wanted to help their former colleagues and teachers on the frontline at Stony Brook University Hospital. Weill Cornell Medicine: Cayuga Health Sends Healthcare Team to Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian for COVID-19 Efforts
More than 50 doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals from Cayuga Health in Ithaca have joined their Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center counterparts to care for New Yorkers diagnosed with COVID-19. The team from Cayuga Health, which operates Cayuga Medical Center, the largest medical center serving Cornell University’s Ithaca campus, arrived April 8 by Cornell Campus-to-Campus bus. Learn more.

The Center for Disaster Medicine at New York Medical College was the backdrop for New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s daily press briefing on the COVID-19 pandemic on May 7.
