Last month, AMSNY Diversity in Medicine pipeline program alumni matched into their residencies. More than half of the graduates chose primary care specialties such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Emergency Care. Learn more about our diversity in medicine programs.
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Launches Enhanced Scholarship Initiative
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) unveiled its Enhanced Scholarship Initiative (ESI), a new program offering substantial debt relief for students with demonstrated financial need. The program will launch in the upcoming academic year and will enable qualifying medical students entering in 2019 and thereafter to graduate with a maximum total debt of $75,000. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: MD-PhD Students Present Research, Learn About the Importance of Mentorship
Thirty-two aspiring physician-scientists from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeonspresented their research posters at the 14th annual MD-PhD Student Research Symposium on April 25. Their research delved into a range of topics, including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and stem cells. Four of the students gave short talks about their work.  Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine Hosts Daylong Event on Providing Care to the Homeless 
Students from more than a dozen medical schools converged at Albert Einstein College of Medicine on Feb. 24 to learn about how to better provide care for homeless people at a daylong symposium on the topic, organized by the Homeless Outreach Project at Einstein (HOPE). Learn more.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: How to Apply to an Osteopathic Medical School
Unlike allopathicmedical schools, which grant Medical Doctor or M.D. degrees, osteopathic medical schools provide Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or D.O. degrees. Weill Cornell Medicine Community Celebrates Diversity at 2019 Awards Ceremony
Weill Cornell Medicine honored 17 faculty, trainees, students and staff April 22 for their outstanding service and leadership in promoting diversity at the academic medical institution. The Diversity Awards recognize exemplary contributions-through research, clinical care, community service and advocacy-to improving the health of populations that historically have had unequal access to care. Learn more.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem: NAACP Exec Tapped as Diversity Director at Touro
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Pharmacy in Harlem have appointed Geoffrey E. Eaton director of community affairs and diversity, the colleges announced this week. Eaton has a long history of leadership in Harlem, serving as first vice president of the New York State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation’s most prominent civil rights organization. Learn more.

New York Medical College: Members of the School of Medicine Class of 2020 Inducted into GHHS
The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) was proud to induct 33 members of the Class of 2020 into its chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS), an initiative of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, at a ceremony on April 1.  Learn more.
Albany Medical College’s Efforts to Support First Generation Medical Students Recognized
Hyacinth Mason, PhD, assistant dean of Student Support and Inclusion and associate professor in the Department of Medical Education and Family and Community Medicine, received first place at the Association of American Medical College’s (AAMC)’s Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) conference for her presentation “The Path through Medical School, Does Generation Status Matter?”  Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine: CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta to Deliver 2019 Commencement Address at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Sanjay Gupta, M.D., CNN’s award-winning chief medical correspondent, will deliver the keynote address at the 2019 commencement ceremony for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, has covered major health stories from around the world.  Learn more.
New York Medical College: AOA Iota Chapter Hosts Annual Visiting Professor Lecture and Induction Ceremony
The New York Iota chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical honor society, welcomed Elliot Levine, M.D, as the Annual AOA Visiting Professor on April 2. Dr. Levine, who is an instructor of medicine and a physician at the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Center of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, specializes in advanced heart failure, transplant cardiology, clinical electrophysiology and nuclear cardiology.  Learn more.
Albany Medical College and Culinary Institute of America Partner to Teach Future Doctors Healthy Cooking
Fifteen medical students from Albany Medical College came to The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY on April 5 and 6 for a two-day intensive healthy cooking course. This pilot program, developed in collaboration by CIA Consulting and Albany Medical College, was designed to teach participants how to choose, prepare, and enjoy a variety of health-promoting foods.  Learn more.
CUNY School of Medicine Hosts its Annual Health Fair
It was a good turnout for the CUNY School of Medicine students who hosted the school’s annual health fair.  The City College campus community came out to receive free screenings including blood pressure, HIV testing, health coaching and dental checkups just to name a few of the activities. Learn more.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Compassionate Care
On any given week, Dr. Bruce Reidenberg spends a good deal of time on the road. With his old fashioned black doctor’s bag in tow, he drives across three counties north of New York City to visit patients as the Hudson Valley region’s medical director for the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. Learn more.
Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: National Physician Licensing Organization Elects UB’s Milling to Executive Board
David A. Milling, MD, senior associate dean of student and academic affairs in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, has been elected an at-large member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Learn more.
Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell Students Select Teachers of the Year
Each spring, graduating classes from all schools on the campus of Hofstra University choose a faculty member to receive the “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” award. This academic term, students of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell have chosen David Elkowitz, DO, and Roya Samuels, MD, as “Distinguished Teachers of the Year” for 2018-2019. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Lisa Kachnic Appointment to Chair of Radiation Oncology 
Lisa Kachnic, MD, one of the nation’s leading radiation oncologists and a pioneer of new approaches to optimize the effectiveness of radiation therapy, has been named chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and chief of the radiation oncology service at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, effective September 1, 2019.  Learn more.
