Governor Hochul Announces More Than $4.6 Million to Expand Access to Health Care, Eliminate Health Care Disparities for New Yorkers

At a press conference on December 5 at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, the New York State Department of Health announced more than $4.6 million in state funding for programs to expand access and eliminate disparities in health care while helping to increase diversity among the physician workforce throughout New York, representing a $1.2 million increase over the previous year’s allocation. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Awarded $3.2 Million to Support Free Summer Program For Disadvantaged Students

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has been awarded a $3.2 million grant to support a free summer program for disadvantaged students interested in a career in medicine. Weill Cornell Medicine Graduate Students Share Cutting-Edge Research in Three-Minute Talks

Three minutes and one projected slide–that’s all each graduate student had to present a big-picture research goal to a non-specialist audience in a way they could understand and appreciate. The eleven students from the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences participated in the eighth annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition. Learn more.

University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: What the Streets Teach

Nikhil Bamarajpet and his mom had become homeless, living on Long Island among others in the same position. One night, a man in their group doubled over with excruciating pain. EMTs eventually came, but “it took them longer to arrive than they stayed,” said Bamarajpet. They dismissed the man’s pain and said there was no room in the hospital, anyway, and then left. A few days later, the man died. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem: A Summer of Learning

Faatin Salekin, a second-year student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem, was always interested in neurology. As an undergrad, he majored in neuroscience, and during his first year of medical school he did a poster presentation about a small discovery. But this past summer, he took his interest to a new level as a summer research intern at the National Institute on Aging, at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Sandra K. Oza, M.D., M.A., Named Inaugural Assistant Dean for Learning Communities at Einstein

Sandra K. Oza, M.D., M.A., has been named the inaugural assistant dean for learning communities at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Oza is a general internist and associate professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine, and currently serves as co-director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) and Transition to Clerkship (TTC) courses at Einstein. Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Stony Brook Mental Health Expert Named to SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute

Adam Gonzalez, PhD, Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Behavioral Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health in the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University, is one of 11 fellows in New York State to be named to the State University of New York’s (SUNY) Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) Class for 2024. Learn more.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Medical Marathon

Athletes of all walks of life gathered in New York City’s five boroughs on November 5 to participate in the TCS New York City Marathon, where students and faculty from the College of Osteopathic Medicine were on hand to provide necessary medical care.
