New York Medical College: Transplant Education Program Invites Medical Students to Participate in Organ Procurements

Medical students at New York Medical College (NYMC) now have the unique opportunity to be part of the lifesaving organ transplant process through the Transplant Education Program (TEP). The Ides of March was far from a time of misfortune for the New York Medical College School of Medicine Class of 2024 as they celebrated taking the next step in their medical training on Match Day. Weill Cornell Medicine: Match Day Marks Next Step in Medical Journey for Students

Branden Sosa was halfway through his undergraduate degree at Hunter College when he had to take time off from school—his mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. For a year and a half, he worked at Hospital for Special Surgery as an office manager to support his family. “It was through that experience I grew to love orthopedics and research,” he said. “I feel like a lot of my formative experiences were gained there.” Learn more.

Albany Medical College Celebrates Match Day 2024

Fourth-year medical students around the country, including 134 at Albany Medical College, learned where they will continue their medical training today. The event, called Match Day, is a career-defining moment in a medical student’s life. Forty students, or 30 percent, were matched to programs in New York State. Forty-one percent of this year’s class will pursue primary care specialties, including family medicine, internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, pediatrics, and obstetrics & gynecology. Two groups of College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) alumni have recently joined forces to put forth the initial funding for scholarships that will directly benefit students. One such collaborative scholarship is being funded by Phil Spadafora (D.O. ’89) and Chris Kyriakides (D.O. ’89), who met on their first day of classes at NYITCOM. Christine Ye traces her passion for medicine back to seventh grade, when she joined a medical mission to Haiti and saw first-hand how access to health care can create stark disparities. “I remember thinking, ‘This issue could have been solved with a vitamin supplement, or a bandaid, or neosporin—something simple,’” said Ye, 26, from Valley Stream, N.Y. “New York is such a different world, but even within New York there are disparities. That just stuck with me; seeing the injustice in health care access was something that always resonated with me.” Learn more.

Philip Nathan Solomon, MD, assistant professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, program director for Northwell Health’s Geriatrics Fellowship Program, and director of Geriatric Education and Clinical Integration, has been named a 2024 Macy Faculty Scholar. Part of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Macy Faculty Scholars Program identifies and nurtures promising early career educators in medicine and nursing and supports them in optimizing learning in clinical environments.
