New York Hospitals Are Ranked Among 2013-14 Best Hospitals by U.S. News

July 16, 2013 – U.S. News surveyed nearly 10,000 specialists and sifted through data for approximately 5,000 hospitals to rank the best. Among those top-ranked included: New York-Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, NYU Langone Medical Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, University of Rochester Medical Center.

Columbia’s Washington Heights Tower Expected to Break Ground This Summer

June 21, 2013 – “Columbia University will begin work on a 14-story Haven Avenue medical and graduate tower this summer, which will house several high tech classrooms, learning centers and even a 300-seat auditorium.”

Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine Receives Next Step in Accreditation

June 20, 2013 – “Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine Dean Lawrence G. Smith, MD, Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz, and North Shore-LIJ Health System Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling recently announced that the Medical School has received its Provisional Accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The school was commended for its ‘richness of resources’.”

Albany Med Honored by American Heart Association

July 15, 2013 – “Albany Medical Center recently became the only medical facility in the Capital Region recognized in three categories in for its success in providing quality care for heart disease and stroke patients by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.”

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Honors University of Rochester Medical Center for Excellent Cardiac Care

July 15, 2013 – “The University of Rochester Medical Center today received Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Blue DistinctionCenter+ SM designation for delivering quality and cost-efficient cardiac care, as part of the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program. URMC is the first and only center in the region to receive this recognition for cardiac care.”

Upstate Medical University Receives Award from the Corporate Volunteer Council

July 15, 2013 – “Upstate Medical University has been honored by the Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) for its “extraordinary support in furthering CVC’s mission.” This is the first year the CVC has recognized a member institution for its commitment to the organization.”

Stony Brook Cardiothoracic Surgeon Receives AHA Distinguished Service Award

July 15, 2013 – “James R. Taylor Jr., MD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Co-Director of Stony Brook University Heart Institute, received the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to improving the heart health of Long Islanders at the American Heart Association’s 17th annual Heart of the Hamptons Ball.”

Experts in Pediatric Cancer Treatment and Research Convene for Memorial Lecture at New York Medical College

July 10, 2013 – “Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor for health affairs and chief executive officer of New York Medical College, delivered the 14th Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) Memorial Lectureship, honoring the memory of all children who have lost a battle with cancer.”

Robert T. Cushing Takes Reins as Board of Directors Chair at Albany Medical College

July 1, 2013 – Robert T. Cushing, executive vice president and chief financial officer of TrustCo Bank Corp, has been elected chairman of the Albany Medical Center Board of Directors. He has served as a member of Albany Med’s board since 2004 and as vice-chair since 2007.

Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine Dean Receives Harvard Dental Medicine’s Highest Award

June 25, 2013 – “Ray C. Williams, DMD, Professor and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, has been awarded the prestigious Paul Goldhaber Award by the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Williams was selected for his leadership career in dentistry which has included research, education and patient care.”

Mount Sinai Queens is Ranked in Top Ten Percent of Hospitals in the U.S. for Adoption of Electronic Medical Records

June 24, 2013 – “Mount Sinai Queens has been recognized by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, or HIMSS, for reaching “Stage 6″ status on the HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM), making it one of only 518 of the more than 5,300 U.S. hospitals tracked by HIMSS Analytics and who have reached that status.”

U.S. News Lauds URMC’s Golisano Children’s Hospital Orthopaedics Care

June 20, 2013 – “For the fifth consecutive year, Golisano Children’s Hospital’s orthopaedic specialists have earned a place among the Best Children’s Hospitals listing, according to U.S. News & World Report. Pediatric orthopaedics is the only service – adult or pediatric – at URMC to earn a Top 50 ranking for five years in a row.”

Somit Scholarship Backs University at Buffalo Stu
ent’s Biochemistry, Neuroscience Work

July 17, 2013 – “Aashutosh Vihani, a junior in the Department of Biochemistry, has received the 2013 Mary Rosenblum Somit Scholarship for demonstrating academic excellence. The biochemistry major, who also has an interest in neurophysiology, approached faculty to propose the idea of developing a special major in neuroscience.”

UB Faculty-Physicians, Students Join Medical Mission in Haiti

July 16, 2013 – “University at Buffalo faculty-physicians and students treated Haiti residents in need of medical care on their Hope for Tomorrow Foundation medical mission. The spring 2013 Haiti team involved five physicians, including two other UB orthopaedic specialists: Mark J. Anders, MD, clinical associate professor, and Craig E. Blum, MD, clinical assistant professor.”

Medquest Offers Teens a Hands-On Approach to Learning About Healthcare Careers

July 15, 2013 – “Two dozen high school students from across Central New York attended a five-day intensive look at healthcare careers at Upstate Medical University’s Medquest Health Careers Exploration Camp, which ran from July 15 to 19 on the Upstate campus.”

Young Workers Join Columbia University Medical Center for the Summer

July 9, 2013 – “Local teens and young adults joined clerical teams across Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) as part of New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Over the next seven weeks, about 90 interns will gain firsthand work experience in the health care field, as they provide much-needed clerical help to CUMC staff across 45 departments.”

Aiden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College Introduces Another Online Certificate

University at Buffalo Medical Students Go ‘Back to School’ to Inspire, Teach Youth

June 28, 2013 – “As participants in the national Doctors Back to School outreach program, approximately 40 University at Buffalo medical students, with four practicing physicians, visited Buffalo’s Health Sciences Charter School to give nearly 300 students there a glimpse of a doctor’s skill set, also serving as real-life role models for the teens.”

University of Rochester Medical Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute Announce Joint Program to Train Surgical Oncologists

June 27, 2013 – “The University of Rochester Medical Center and Roswell Park Cancer Institute have received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for a joint two-year fellowship program in complex general surgical oncology. Surgeons who are accepted into the program will ultimately train at both institutions and, upon completion of the program, will be eligible for board certification in surgical oncology.”

Albany Medical Center & University of Rochester Medical Center Honored for Commitment to LGBT Patients

July 15, 2013 – Albany Medical Center and the University of Rochester Medical Center have been recognized for their commitment to equality for its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization.

How Columbia’s “Hip Hop Doc” is Raising Stroke Awareness

July 11, 2013 – Dr. Olajide Williams, chief of staff of neurology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, has developed a public health campaign that uses hip hop music to teach children to identify stroke symptoms.

Upstate’s Community Campus Opens Region’s First Emergency Department for Older Adults

June 26, 2013 – Upstate University Hospital cut the ribbon on Central New York’s first geriatric emergency department. The new Geriatric Emergency Unit, called “GEM Care, the Senior ED Unit,” located on Upstate’s Community Campus at 4900 Broad Road, consists of eight beds with geriatric-specific equipment. It offers emergency care tailored to those 65 and older.

Upstate to Offer Medical Toxicology Consult Service

June 18, 2013 – “Upstate University Hospital is adding a Medical Toxicology Consultation service for patients beginning July 1. Upstate is the first and only healthcare facility in the region to offer this service that is available through the Department of Emergency Medicine, in cooperation with the Upstate New York Poison Center.”

University of Rochester Medical Students Launch Monthly La Noche De Español

June 13, 2013 – “Students at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry are launching Spanish Night at UR Well. The student-run health clinic provides acute care to Rochester’s uninsured and homeless. Beginning June 18, UR Well will have Spanish-speaking translators available every third Tuesday of the month from 6-9 p.m.”
