AMSNY Receives Grant from FSMB to Fund Study on Early Graduation During COVID Pandemic
 
The Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY) is one of the grant recipients from the FSMB Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Match Day 2021: Graduating Medical Students Receive Their Residency Matches
 
One-hundred forty-five students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai learned what the next phase of their career path would be at Match Day 2021, when each of them opened a carefully sealed envelope that revealed the U.S. residency program they had “matched” to and would be attending this year following graduation. The suspenseful moments leading up to their collective and coordinated noontime “discoveries” were shared over Zoom on Friday, March 19, with 400 participants, including family, friends, and Mount Sinai faculty and staff who supported the Class of 2021 with smiles, cheers, and words of encouragement. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Students Celebrate Match Day 2021
 
The results are in and there is reason to celebrate: Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons medical students have again matched to remarkable residencies. At noon on March 19, members of the VP&S Class of 2021 received their match letters via email. Later in the afternoon, many visited the lobby of the Vagelos Education Center to attend a physically distanced event designed to celebrate their achievements while honoring the Columbia University Keep Healthy compact by taking precautions to ensure the safety of participants in the ongoing pandemic. New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Match Day 2021: The Next Wave of Healthcare Heroes

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Students Celebrate Match Day
 
As a noon-time gong sounded, fourth-year medical students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine celebrated Match Day today and learned where they will begin the next phase of their training as residents and interns at hospitals and medical centers around the country. With COVID-19 pandemic restrictions still in place, members of the Class of 2021 gathered both virtually and at a socially distanced event on campus, in the housing courtyard and on the athletic courts atop the adjacent parking garage. Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: A Record 149 Med Students Match to Residencies
 
Although the Renaissance School of Medicine’s 2021 Match Day for fourth-year medical students remained a virtual event, there was much celebration for the success of the class as a record 149 students received their residency assignments. Of the students matching to New York State assignments, a record 30 percent (20 of 66) will be staying at Stony Brook Medicine as physicians. Learn more.
New York Medical College School of Medicine Class of 2021 Celebrates Match Day
 
Members of the New York Medical College School of Medicine Class of 2021 celebrated the next step on their path to becoming physicians on March 19, as they learned where they were matched to medical residency programs and will continue their training for the next several years in their chosen specialty. Although it was not the traditional in-person envelope opening ceremony, students learned where they matched online and a live stream of the event as well as interactive chat rooms allowed the students to celebrate together virtually with family and friends joining in the celebration. Learn more.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine Celebrates 2021 Match Day in Virtual Ceremony
 
On Friday, March 19, members of the 180th class of NYU Grossman School of Medicine learned the name of the medical institution and residency training program at which their careers as doctors will finally begin. This year, 118 students matched to a spectacular list of top programs across the country. Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: Make Commitment to Righting Racial Injustice in Health, Jacobs School Lecturer Urges
 
The title of Maxine Hayes’ virtual talk in March as part of the Celebration of Inclusiveness in Medicine and Science Distinguished Lecture Series was “Righting the Wrong of Racial Injustice in Health.” It was a title she chose with care. “I didn’t say ‘health care,’ ” she pointed out at the start of her talk, “I said ‘health.’ Health is one of our most precious attributes. If we don’t have health, there is very little we can do in this life. That’s why Martin Luther King Jr. said that of all the injustices, it is the worst.” Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: New Pediatrics Scholarship Program Will Address Health Inequity
 
A new program launched by the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Pediatrics will train pediatricians and support their development in understanding and addressing health inequity through research and community engagement. Called the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Scholars Program, this initiative will engage diverse and expert community faculty representing child and adolescent health in multidisciplinary fields such as education, literacy, family systems, trauma, and mental health. Focusing on the timely topic of access and excess in health care, the Seventh Annual NYMed Talks, organized entirely by New York Medical College School of Medicine (SOM) students, took place virtually on March 11. Teaching embryology – the study of embryos and their development – to medical students is a necessary challenge. It sets the foundation for understanding anatomy, as well as development and disease. Albany Medical College Students Create Bridge of Aid to East Africa
 
Roughly a year ago, a team of six medical students from Albany Medical College, co-led by Nevon Song, ’23, along with John Moon, ’20, Arun Chocklingham, ’20, Sara Silberstein, ’22, Peter Inglis, ’21, Sam Fordyce, ’21, and mentor Gary Siskin, MD, professor and chair of the
Department of Radiology, faced off against a team from Yale School of Medicine. They were finalists in a competition hosted by the Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR) that challenged teams from medical schools across the country to come up with an innovative solution to a problem in global health. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University:Dr. William Fyke Becomes First Student to Complete Downstate-University of Bordeaux Program
 
Congratulations are in order to William Fyke, fourth year MD-PhD student in the Neural & Behavioral Science program in Downstate’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS), who is the first student to be trained via the SUNY Downstate-University of Bordeaux cotutelle program. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Students Present Their Latest Studies at Medical Student Research Day
 
One hundred six poster presentations and four oral presentations capped off new research that was conducted by students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and featured at Mount Sinai’s Fourth Annual Karen Zier, PhD, Medical Student Research Day, held over Zoom in March. Participating in Research Day fulfills one of the medical school’s graduation requirements. Eighty percent of the presenters each year are in their second year of medical school. Learn more.
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University: Takisha Morancy and Christopher George Awarded 2021 Full Year Research Scholarship
 
Research is one of the essential underpinnings of medicine, and here at Downstate, it continues to be at the heart of our academic programming, and central to our institutional mission and core offerings. Annually, for nearly 20-years, the College of Medicine (COM) Alumni Association has awarded the “Full Year Research Scholarship” in support of student-led medical research— providing up to $36,000 for students to conduct and complete their investigations throughout the course of one full academic year. Alice Fornari, EdD, RD, associate dean for educational skills development at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and vice president of faculty development, Northwell Health, is the recipient of the 2021 Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship from the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE). Three things motivated Jerome D. Chao, MD, FACS, and his wife, Katherine, to make a $1 million gift to Albany Med and they all had to do with family. The founder of Chao Plastic Surgery, in Latham, Dr. Chao said he found himself thinking about who had helped him achieve the prolific career he enjoys today—a nearly two-decade run that included seven years of service to Albany Med as chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: With $16 Million Gift, Columbia Establishes Treatment Center and Clinical Trials Network for Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases
 
A new center that will provide specialized care for patients with Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases will begin seeing patients this summer at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. The Cohen Center for Health and Recovery from Tick-Borne Diseases, supported by a $16 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, will be the first in New York City to offer dedicated treatment for people with Lyme and related diseases. New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumnus to Head Up Catholic Health
 
NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine alumnus Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy (D.O. ’99) has been named chief executive officer and president of Catholic Health (formerly Catholic Health Services). In his new role, effective April 16, O’Shaughnessy will lead a healthcare system that employs approximately 17,000 professionals and operates six Long Island hospitals, along with a network of physician practices and a home nursing and hospice service. So the second-year Einstein medical student was happy to enroll last December when the Einstein-Montefiore trial site was seeking volunteers to test the AstraZeneca/Oxford University COVID-19 vaccine.
