NYS Deans Go To Washington, D.C. for Annual Advocacy Days
Deans from eight of the New York State medical schools participated in the Associated Medical Schools of New York’s (AMSNY) annual advocacy days in Washington, D.C. They met with 15 members of the New York State Congressional Delegation, Senator Charles E. Schumer, and House Republican leadership to discuss several priorities and issues of interest to the medical schools.

New AAMC Competition Calls for Videos Depicting the Future of Academic Medicine
What will U.S. medical schools look like in 2033? To answer this question, the Association of American Medical Colleges has launched a video competition, “Light-years Beyond Flexner: Academic Medicine in 2033,” challenging member medical schools to envision innovations of the future of academic medicine.
Schools interested in participating are asked to form a team and submit a two-minute video depicting any aspect of medical school or medical education 20 years into the future. The submission deadline is September 15th.

New York Medical College and Stony Brook University School of Medicine Join Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health
August 14, 2013 – “New York Medical College (NYMC) and Stony Brook University School of Medicine have been designated as founding members of the newly formed Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). ASPPH connects public health schools and programs accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).”

University at Buffalo Gets $1 Million HRSA Grant to Educate Nurses on Oral Health
August 14, 2013 – “The University at Buffalo School of Nursing has been awarded a $1,120,953 Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Advanced Nursing Education training grant for nurse practitioners to work with dental students in interdisciplinary teams, sharing educational and practice experiences that improve oral and systemic care.”

University at Buffalo Medical School Names Leslie Bisson Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics
August 14, 2013 – “Leslie J. Bisson, MD, associate professor in the University at Buffalo Department of Orthopaedics, has been appointed the inaugural June A. and Eugene R. Mindell, MD Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University at Buffalo. This brings to 12 the number of new chairs and chair-level appointees named by Michael E. Cain, MD, vice president for health sciences and dean of the UB medical school, in the past five years.”

August 6, 2013 – In a recent Graduateprograms.com survey, current and recent medical students rated more than 1,200 schools across the country based on their experiences. New York University School of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and University of Rochester ranked among the top 50.

New Neurology Appointments to Focus on Expanding Access at Home and Abroad
August 1, 2013 – “Gretchen Birbeck, M.D., M.P.H., and E. Ray Dorsey, M.D., M.B.A., have joined the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Department of Neurology. Birbeck, an epilepsy specialist, and Dorsey, a movement disorders specialist, will both focus on the global burden of neurological disorders and efforts to expand access to underserved populations.”

100 Percent of TouroCOM’s Graduates Placed in Residency Programs
July 26, 2013 – “The entire 2013 graduating class of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in Harlem was placed in residency programs, with about half matched to primary care residencies, a key mission of the school. The graduates, who received their DO degrees in June, matched to many of the most prestigious residency programs in the country.”

July 26, 2013 – “The Mount Sinai Medical Center has been honored with the Circle of Life Award by the American Hospital Association. The award was accepted by R. Sean Morrison, MD, Director of the Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute, Director of the National Palliative Care Research Center and Professor of Geriatrics, Palliative and Internal Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.”

Virtual 3-D Desktop Targets Medicine, Education

400 Individuals Received Complimentary On-Site Melanoma Screenings at 2013 Aspen Ideas Festival
July 3, 2013 – “In an effort to detect and prevent skin cancer, dermatologists from The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City performed approximately 400 complimentary melanoma screenings at the Aspen Ideas Festival (AIF) in Aspen, Colorado. Mount Sinai is the first medical center to sponsor the AIF held from June 26 through July 2, 2013.”
