University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Pathway Program Proves Access Can Cultivate Scientists

In the summer of 2021, the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience Diversity Commission and the City College of New York launched the partnership program NEUROCITY. By collaborating with the Summer Scholars Program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, organizers were able to launch the program that has, to date, put nearly 30 undergraduate students from historically marginalized backgrounds in research labs across the University of Rochester and University of Rochester Medical Center campuses. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Pathway Program Receives National Diversity STEM Award

The Einstein Enrichment Program, which serves high-achieving Bronx middle and high school students, has received the 2023 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. Learn more.

New York Medical College: New Area in Concentration in Health Equity Leadership Introduced at New York Medical College

The New York Medical College School of Medicine has introduced a new area of concentration in health equity leadership this academic year to equip medical students with the leadership skills to combat health inequities, racism and bias within the health care system and society overall. The Areas of Concentration Program is designed to provide elective opportunities for medical students who wish to pursue an area of personal interest in depth beyond the required medical school curriculum. Learn more.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine: Teleneurology Challenges Met by Training Curriculum

A new physician-training system in telehealth simulates key parts of traditional in-person neurological exams, which use little reflex hammers, pinpricks, and flashlights to test nerve function. The three-year program, which was designed by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, has trained at least 68 neurology residents since its rollout in 2020. Published online August 3 in Neurology Education, a new analysis of the curriculum identifies challenges to translating in–person exam techniques that use hands-on tools to an online setting—and proposes solutions. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Future Doctors Train with NCPD’s Homeland Security to Respond to ‘Active Shooters’ Simulation

On Friday, September 22, 2023, first-year medical students at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell responded shoulder-to-shoulder with Homeland Security forces straight into an active shooter simulation to test their newly acquired emergency medical skills. The all-day disaster drill, which included other mass casualty incident scenarios, was orchestrated by Nassau County Fire Service Academy (NCFSA) instructors and held on their multi-acre campus in Old Bethpage, NY. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Launches Comprehensive Career Development Program for Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows and Early-Career Faculty

Albert Einstein College of Medicine is launching a new comprehensive training program designed to enhance the professional skills necessary for successful careers in science and medicine. The objective of the Biomedical Sciences Leadership (BSL) Program is to equip participants with the essential tools, skills, and expertise to confidently assume leadership positions in academia, administration, government, and industry. Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Standardizing Blood Pressure Measurement Training

Hypertension affects some 120 million Americans, yet according to multiple medical data sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 25 percent of those with hypertension have the condition under control. Training future healthcare professionals how to consistently take accurate blood pressure measurement (BMP) is an important aspect to monitoring patients’ blood pressure. Learn more.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine Welcomes 102 First-Year Students

For the 102 first-year students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine who took part in the time-tested ritual known as the White Coat Ceremony, cheered on by family, the milestone represented the beginning of their medical training. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: With Each White Coat Ceremony, a Renewed Commitment to Advancing Diversity

The class of 2027 was seated at the Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, September 12, waiting to be coated in the White Coat Ceremony, which marks the start of their medical education. Dennis Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, came up on stage and addressed the audience. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem: Three Sisters Pursue a Medical Dream

For the Centeno-Gavica sisters—Angela, Jenifer, and Mishelle— medicine is a family affair. All three are in their internal medicine residencies: Angela is in her first year at New York-Presbyterian; Jenifer and Mishelle are in their third year at, respectively, Naples Community Hospital in Florida and Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital. New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Fighting Childhood Brain Cancer

Lukas Faltings, a student in his third year of NYITCOM’s D.O./Ph.D. program (osteopathic medicine/medical and biological sciences) is a key investigator in Zhao’s cancer research lab. Faltings uses molecular biology assays, in-vitro culture experiments, and animal models to understand the development of CPC. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem Student Elected to National Board of SNMA

Third year Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem student Brianna Mosley was elected as the Region IX Director for the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). Weill Cornell Medicine Dr. Chenxu Zhu Receives NIH Director’s New Innovator Award

Dr. Chenxu Zhu, an assistant professor of physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell Medicine and a core faculty member of the New York Genome Center, has been awarded the National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award to fund an ambitious project to develop single-cell sequencing tools, known collectively as “multi-omics,” that will help track age-related changes in gene regulation programs, as well as cell decay, in brain cells from preclinical models. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: New Innovator Award for a High-Risk, High-Reward Project

This year, Cancer researcher Neil Vasan, MD, PhD, was one of 58 investigators in the country to receive a prestigious New Innovator Award from the NIH’s High-Risk, High-Reward program, which supports unusually innovative research from early-career investigators. Vasan’s project will extend his work on the PI3K kinase to the entire “kinome,” all 556 kinase genes in the human genome. Kinases are one of the most important targets in precision oncology, but the ideal kinase targets or kinase drug combinations for most cancers have not been established. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Two Columbia Faculty Elected to National Academy of Medicine

Two faculty in the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons—Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, and Brent R. Stockwell, PhD—have been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Both also are members of Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Learn more.

New York Medical College: Robert D. Holland M.D., M.H.A., Appointed to Lead the Rehabilitation Medicine Program at New York Medical College

Robert D. Holland, M.D., M.H.A., has been appointed the Catherine and Vladislav P. Hinterbuchner Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) and director of rehabilitation medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, a major clinical affiliate of NYMC. Dr. Holland most recently served as medical director of Mount Sinai’s Amsterdam Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Manhattan, New York. Dr. Holland will assume his new role on November 27. Learn more.
