SCIRP
SCIRP: Advancing spinal cord injury research in New York since 1998
Created in 1998, the New York State Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) funds the testing and validation of new therapies for spinal cord injury. A large portion of the funding goes to medical schools in New York, providing robust scientific research on spinal cord and other neurologic injuries and resulting in additional breakthroughs to benefit patients and their families.
This important program is funded through a surcharge on moving motor vehicle violations and has resulted in millions of dollars in additional funding for New York State’s researchers in this area of science. Additional sources of funding include the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the Veterans Administration, and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Scientific discovery and progress in this area results in positive impacts on the lives of patients with spinal cord injuries and applications beyond.
