2014 Dean’s Honors Day Held at NYU Langone Medical Center
October 6, 2014 – NYU Langone Medical Center honored three faculty members for lifetime achievements in clinical excellence, education and science at the 13th Annual Dean’s Honors Day Ceremony held yesterday. In addition to those receiving Master Scholars Awards, faculty members were honored for their appointments to endowed chairs, or department chairs, service as chairs, receiving tenure or promotions, and extramural and intramural distinctions.

Look who’s 5! Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital celebrates birthday
September 26, 2014 – “It’s hard to believe that five years ago, Syracuse was one of the largest cities in the country without a children’s hospital,” said Thomas Welch, MD, medical director of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Upstate Medical University. “With overwhelming support from the community, which continues today, we’ve not only opened our doors of this special facility, we’ve also helped strengthen pediatric care for children in this region.”

New York Medical College Hosts Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Mentoring Program
October 4, 2014 – New York Medical College hosted a free Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Mentoring Program for college students and pre-health advisors on September 21. The program was well-received by the 138 students representing 40 colleges in the tri-state area, six pre-med/pre-health advisors and eight parents in attendance.

Making PhDs More Employable: New Education Initiative Paves the Way
October 2, 2014 – Preparing graduate students and post-doctoral trainees for jobs outside of academia is the goal of a new career-training program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), supported by $1.8 million from the National Institutes of Health.

New York Institute of Technology Medical Student wins the McCaughan Heritage Scholarship
October 2, 2014 – A New York Institute of Technology osteopathic medical student has won a national award for her leadership and academic accomplishments. Kathleen M. Vazzana, a fourth-year student at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, won the McCaughan Heritage Scholarship Award from the American Osteopathic Foundation.

Brooklyn Medical Student Designs Device to Save Women from Bleeding to Death During Childbirth
August 18, 2014 – Kamal, who is now a first-year medical student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, discovered that a few doctors and midwives in some underdeveloped countries were already testing a similar technique — but they were using the same amount of saline for all women, despite their varying sizes.

Upstate launches annual Community Giving Campaign to benefit area human service agencies
October 7, 2014 – The Community Giving Campaign is Upstate’s annual drive for donations to support various charities throughout Central New York and beyond. Through the Community Giving Campaign, employees can choose to donate to one or a combination of agencies via payroll deduction, credit card or personal check.

Cardiologist Joins Albany Medical Center
October 3, 2014 – Arjun Nair, M.D., a fellowship-trained cardiologist, has joined Albany Medical Center’s Division of Cardiology and has been appointed assistant professor of medicine at Albany Medical College.

New Ebola Patient Tracking and Data Management Tool Helps Healthcare Workers on the Front Lines of Outbreak
October 2, 2014 – A new tool developed by a Weill Cornell Medical College researcher can enhance patient care and surveillance in Ebola treatment centers in Western Africa, where the risk of disease transmission and bulky personal protective equipment prevent the use of computers and other electronic devices at the bedside. The spreadsheet tool puts accurate, up-to-date clinical information in the hands of providers, literally: It synthesizes a patient’s medical data to generate customized, printable lists that can be carried through the treatment facility to improve care delivery. It is freely available from the website of Weill Cornell’s Institute for Disease and Disaster Preparedness.
