Medical students hold nationwide ‘die-ins’ and protests Wednesday because #BlackLivesMatter

December 9, 2014 – Students at more than 70 medical schools – in New York, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere – will protest lack of indictments for police killings in Ferguson, Mo., and New York, and to spotlight racial bias as a public health issue.

Sanford I. Weill Retires as Chair of the Weill Cornell Board of Overseers After 20 Years of Transformative Leadership

December 9, 2014 – After 20 years of bold and visionary leadership that has transformed Weill Cornell Medical College into a global healthcare enterprise, Sanford I. Weill will retire as chair of the Weill Cornell Board of Overseers on Jan. 1. Jessica M. Bibliowicz, a successful entrepreneur in the financial services business for nearly three decades, who has served on the Board of Overseers for the past decade, will succeed Mr. Weill, the new chair emeritus.

New York Medical College Lab Approved for Start-Up NY Program

December 8, 2014 – In a move that will both bolster entrepreneurship and enhance economic development in the Mid-Hudson Valley and beyond, 11,800 square feet of newly developed research space on the campus of New York Medical College (NYMC), including its new biotechnology incubator (BioInc@NYMC), has been named a tax-free zone in the Empire State Development’s START-UP NY business development initiative.

Work Hard, Play Hard: TouroCOM-Middletown’s Student Wellness Day

December 8, 2014 – After slewing through midterms and OSCEs, students at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine-Middletown finally had a chance to relax during Student Wellness Day. Organized by a committee comprised of members of student services, the afternoon provided a range of fun and stress-relieving activities for the students, including massage therapy, yoga, Zumba classes, Reiki therapy, and games. In another room, students played with and petted certified therapy Bernese mountain dogs and puppies. En route to the different activities, students could also grab a healthy snack from the table of apples and bananas. The event ended with a raffle drawing, in which three lucky students won wellness baskets.

December 5, 2014 – On Dec. 5, first-year medical students at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will participate in a new requirement: attending the First Year Humanities Day.

The Mount Sinai Health System Names New Vice Chair of Neurosurgery and Director of the Cerebrovascular Surgery Program

December 4, 2014 – Internationally regarded as a leader in the treatment of blood vessel diseases of the brain, neck and spine, J Mocco, MD, has been appointed Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of the Cerebrovascular Surgery Program for the Mount Sinai Health System.

Susan H. McDaniel, Ph.D., Elected 2016 APA President

December 3, 2014 – Susan H. McDaniel, Ph.D., director of UR Medicine’s Institute for the Family, has been elected 2016 president of the American Psychological Association (APA). The APA is the largest professional organization representing psychology in the United States.

Upstate is named 2014 Customer of the Year by New York State Industries for the Disabled

December 3, 2014 – Upstate Medical University has received a 2014 Customer of the Year award from New York State Industries for the Disabled Inc (NYSID). The award recognizes Upstate for creating jobs for New Yorkers with disabilities through its partnership with NYSID and NYSID vendors that contract through New York’s Preferred Source Program.
