January 13, 2015 – Albany Medical Center announced today that expert general surgeon David Ford, M.D., has joined Albany Med’s Department of Surgery and has been appointed associate professor of surgery at Albany Medical College.

Breast Health and Breastfeeding Medicine Division Opens at Upstate University Hospital
January 5, 2015 – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Upstate University Hospital is forming a new Division of Breast Health and Breastfeeding Medicine. In addition to focusing on overall breast health and lactation support, the new division will be home to the Breast Cancer High Risk Program.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Announces New Chair of Department of Microbiology and Immunology
December 30, 2014 – Albert Einstein College of Medicine of YeshivaUniversity today named Steven A. Porcelli, M.D., the new chair of the department of microbiology & immunology. A noted immunologist, Dr. Porcelli is currently the Murray and Evelyne Weinstock Chair in Microbiology & Immunology and professor of medicine at Einstein.

New York Medical College Launches Master of Science in Medical Ethics Program
January 8, 2015 – New York Medical College (NYMC) has announced the launch of a Master of Science in Medical Ethics program in keeping with its mission of educating outstanding health care professionals for the multicultural world of the 21st century. Beginning in the fall, NYMC will offer courses that use historical, philosophical, legal and social-scientific approaches and models to address bioethical challenges. The new masters degree and certificate program will provide students with rigorous methodological and substantive training and emphasize clinical medical ethics, compassionate care, religio-cultural competence, ethical implications pertaining to emerging technologies and the different notions of justice that influence ideas of public health. Classes will initially be offered in the evening and online. Students will study with a broad range of faculty, allowing them to draw on the diverse expertise and resources that NYMC has to offer.

The Winner of Student DO of the Year 2014
January 6, 2015 – Student Doctor VanDine emerged as the winner after a comprehensive process that evaluated the amazing accomplishments of a field of the ten outstanding student candidates. The SDOY (Student DO of the Year 2014) Committee, led by second year student Angelo Mascia, dedicated many hours to review every candidate’s accomplishments. The committee’s members included Kalliope Kyriakides, Filippo Romanello, Jaime Allen, Jeff Jett, Mark Mahan and Doctors Chan and Geisler.

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Class of 2017 Begins Major Clinical Year
January 6, 2015 – Members of the P&S Class of 2017 made the transition to their major clinical year during the Jan. 5 Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician’s Ceremony. The class has 184 students who will now continue their education by working with and learning from house staff and faculty members directly involved in patient care. Another three Class of 2017 members who participated in the ceremony will begin their major clinical year in January 2016.

Columbia University Medical Center Tapped for Help with MCAT Prep
December 22, 2014 – Columbia University was well represented in this year’s competition to create free online resources to help students prepare for next year’s MCAT medical college admission test. The MCAT has been revised for 2015 to reflect changes in medical education. For example, a social and behavioral sciences section has been added in recognition of the importance of sociocultural and behavioral determinants of health outcomes. A new critical analysis and reasoning skills section acknowledges the need for well-rounded applications from a variety of backgrounds.

Mount Sinai Health System and UC San Diego Partner to Promote Innovation in Emergency Medical Services
January 7, 2015 – As part of nationwide efforts to discover and implement best practices for emergency medical care, the Mount Sinai Health System today announced the launch of its “Promoting Innovations in Emergency Medical Services” project, in collaboration with University of California, San Diego Health System. The project’s goals include identifying and addressing the regulatory, financial and technological obstacles to improving our nation’s EMS systems. It is supported by a $225,000 grant from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Health Affairs, and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

NYU Langone Medical Center Utilizing New Technology
January 5, 2015 – Many patients undergoing lumpectomy surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center for the removal of an early detected breast tumor – the surgical option of choice for this diagnosis — are benefitting from new intra-operative technology that detects microscopic amounts of cancer cells on removed tumor tissue not visible during or following surgical intervention.
