The Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award Program

This year’s Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award Program is due June 1, 2015.
The purpose of the Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award Program is to increase the number of physicians practicing in areas of New York State designated by the New York State Board of Regents as having a shortage of physicians. Emphasis is placed on primary care.
Pending the appropriation of State funds during the yearly session of the New York State legislature, at least 80 awards up to $10,000 per year for two years are offered. Award amount is based on undergraduate and medical school student loan amounts, loan interest expense, and income.
Applications and information are available from the Office of K-16 Initiatives and Access Programs, Scholarships and Grants Administration Unit by February of the competition year.

Mount Sinai Beth Israel Names New Chair of the Department of Medicine

March 4, 2015 – Ira Jacobson, MD, a world-renowned expert in the field of hepatology and liver disease, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.

AMSNY Diversity Lobby Day Student Testimonial: Citali Camacho

March 4, 2015 – Citali Camacho is one of ten students who participated in this year’s AMSNY Diversity Lobby Day in Albany, NY on March 3rd. Citali is a high school student and aspiring physician who participated in Staten Island University’s Physician Career Enhancement Program this past summer under the tutelage of Dr. Marianne Smith.

Upstate’s College of Medicine Enrolls Higher Percentage of State Residents than Other State Medical Schools

March 11, 2015 – Upstate Medical University’s College of Medicine’s incoming class for fall 2014 had a higher percentage of New York residents than the other allopathic medical schools in the state. The data was shared by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

NYU School of Medicine is Top-15 in the Nation and #2 in New York on U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 “Best Graduate Schools” Rankings

March 10, 2015 – NYU School of Medicine is pleased to announce it is #14 in the nation for research, and #2 in New York, out of 130 medical schools on the 2016 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” rankings, issued today. This is the first time that the school appears in the top-15 of institutions by U.S. News, and is a significant jump from #34 in 2007.

Communication, Coordination, Collaboration

March 6, 2015 – The course is called “Introduction to Cultural Competence in Healthcare” and it is usually offered to Touro’s first year D.O. students to expose them to challenges in understanding cultural diversity in healthcare. The goal is to turn them into better doctors practicing medicine in underserved communities.

TouroCOM-Middletown Students Inducted into Top Honor Society

March 6, 2015 – On February 13th, twelve Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine-Middletown students—Janki Shah, Jacklyn Lee, Matthew McCaffery, Odinachi Moghalu, Nima Rejali, Zinan Cheng, Tylor Connor, Daniel Lee, Anu Gopalan, Brendan Skeehan, Christian Muller, and Manoj Jagtiani—were inducted into the Sigma Sigma Phi (SSP) Honor Society, a national osteopathic medicine honors fraternity that recognizes D.O. students who demonstrate high levels of academic excellence and dedication to community service.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and LifeMap Solutions Launch Asthma Study for iPhone

March 9, 2015 – The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and LifeMap Solutions, a subsidiary of BioTime (BTX), today announced the launch of a large-scale medical research study that uses the new ResearchKit framework developed by Apple to make it easy for individuals who suffer from Asthma to participate in studies right from their iPhone.

Dr. Silvia C. Formenti Appointed Chair of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Radiation Oncologist-in-Chief at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College

March 4, 2015 – Dr. Silvia C. Formenti, an international expert in the use of radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer, has been appointed chair of the newly established Department of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College and radiation oncologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective April 15. Dr. Formenti, currently the chair of radiation oncology at New York University Langone Medical Center, has also been named the associate director of radiation oncology at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Pharmacy Offers Specialty Care for GEM Care Patients

March 4, 2015 – Upstate University Hospital’s Community Campus pharmacy department is featured in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (January edition) for how the department spearheaded an effort to integrate its services with GEM Care, the Senior Emergency Department located at the Community Campus.
