Yaron Tomer, MD, has been named the Marilyn and Stanley M. The 145 medical students entering Albany Medical College donned their white coats for the first time on Aug. 4 during the College’s White Coat Ceremony, held at the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre in The Egg at the Empire State Plaza. New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Coating NYITCOM’s Class of 2027

At the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) annual White Coat Ceremonies on Long Island, N.Y., and in Jonesboro, Ark., approximately 400 future physicians received white coats, symbolizing their entry into the medical profession. Seen as a rite of passage and the official start of medical school, the white coat has embodied cleanliness, trust, and healing since the late 1800s. Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Future MDs Enter Field at a Time of Accelerating Change and Discovery

At the Renaissance School of Medicine’s (RSOM) White Coat Ceremony, 136 incoming students donned their physician “white coats” and took the Hippocratic Oath for the first time. Held at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center, the annual ceremony brings students, their families, and faculty together as the academic year begins and members of the Class of 2027 embark on their journeys toward becoming physicians. White coats were presented to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Class of 2027 during the traditional ceremony that marks the beginning of medical school for these future doctors. Weill Cornell Medicine Class of 2027 Launches Medical Journey With White Coats

Nick Rosenfeld’s passion for medicine is profoundly personal, as is his desire for cultivating enduring relationships with patients. In the summer of 2019, Rosenfeld was preparing to start his freshman year at Loyola University Chicago—the first in his family to attend college. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: New Grant Helps Preventive Medicine Residents Forge Deeper Ties With Vulnerable Groups

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai General Preventive Medicine Residency Program has won a prestigious federal grant designed to reduce social inequities in health care through enhanced resident training and expanded public health intervention. Under terms of the four-year award, the program’s six residents take an intensive summer course in health equity. Residents learn about health literacy, communication, and data analysis skills to address health disparities. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Aimee Payne Appointed Chair of the Department of Dermatology

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and dermatologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/CUIMC and will begin her new roles on Dec. 4. She succeeds David Bickers, MD, the Carl Truman Nelson Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at VP&S and director of the dermatology service at NYP/CUIMC who stepped down last July after 28 years in these leadership positions. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: A Touro Internist and Researcher Inspires her Medical Students to Study the Source of Life

Dr. Hanna Wollocko loves working with Touro students because, she says, they are curious, careful, confident and persevering. “I am teaching them to be patient, very, very patient—the best quality, the highest quality in research is patience,” says Wollocko, an adjunct clinical associate professor of internal medicine at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM). New York Medical College Professor Dr. Esther Sabban Works to Find Better Ways to Deal with the Stressors of Daily Life and Traumatic Stress

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and the recently appointed Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College, has spent the better part of her 40-year career studying the molecular underpinnings of susceptibility and resilience to stress, particularly post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now, with the support of the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professorship of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences’ $5 million endowment, she hopes to translate her findings from animal studies into tools that can help people. Learn more.

Touro Opens New Medical School to Address Healthcare Crisis

New York Medical College: Major Laboratory Renovations Enhance Biomedical Research at New York Medical College

Propelled by a matching grant from New York State’s higher education capital (HECap funding), the recently completed laboratory renovation project to the Basic Sciences Building at New York Medical College (NYMC) has transformed the space to become not only innovative but collaborative by design to enrich and diversify biomedical research. Enhancements include the construction of 17,000 square feet of multidisciplinary research space, accommodating up to 12 research teams; 3,000 square feet of shared core instrumentation space; and installation of flexible casework systems and best-in-class equipment. Learn more.

Albany Medical College: Med Students Remain Reliable Fixture at Annual Community Health Event

Albany Medical College students and faculty made a strong showing at a long-running community health event to support medically underserved neighborhoods in Albany. More than 90 med students from the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), supported by Project MedSCOPE (Student Community Outreach for Prevention and Education) volunteered at the 20th annual Dr. Pamela J.
