Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Receives $6.5 Million Gift to Expand the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center

With a transformational gift of $6.5 million, the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons will launch its second decade of excellence in clinical care, research, and education programs for people with cerebral palsy. Established in 2013, the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center is dedicated to lifetime, multidisciplinary care for families living with cerebral palsy. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: A New Fellowship Program at Mount Sinai Will Help Shape the Next Generation of Health Care Leaders 

The Graduate Medical Education (GME) program at the Icahn School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences have announced the launch of the Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management Fellowship for early career stage physicians. This ACGME-accredited fellowship program is designed to offer physicians a comprehensive experience combining the academic rigor of the school’s Masters of Health Administration (MHA) program with hands-on training in Graduate Medical Education. Learn more.

New York Medical College Establishes Psychiatry Residency Program at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center

The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine has expanded its NYMC-sponsored residency programs at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, New York, to include a new Psychiatry Residency Program. The program is offered jointly at Saint Joseph’s and its St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester division in Harrison, New York. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Law and Medical Students Team Up for National Mock-Trial Competition

Students from the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell served as expert medical witnesses during the sixth National Medical-Legal Trial Competition on October 6-8. The event, hosted annually by the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, is the only trial competition in the country where a medical school and a law school collaborate to simulate real-life expert testimony by doctors. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Lab Coat Ceremony for PhD and MD/PhD Students Marks the Start of New Journeys in Research and Training

Amid cheers and applause, first-year PhD students and third-year MD/PhD students received crisp white lab coats to mark the start of their journeys into academic research and training during a recent ceremony held by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The lab coats symbolize the professionalism and authority that trainees will develop and nurture during their time at Mount Sinai. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell Class of 2027 Commemorates the Transition to Healthcare Professionals at Thirteenth Annual White Coat Ceremony

The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell held its thirteenth White Coat Ceremony at the Long Island Marriott Grand Ballroom on October 13, 2023. Surrounded by family, friends, mentors, faculty, and school administrators, 101 first-year medical students came forward to be individually “cloaked” in the iconic white coat — the representative emblem of the medical field. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Pathway Programs Awarded $3.25 Million Grant to Support Expansion and New Initiatives

Albert Einstein College of Medicine has received a $3.25 million grant to expand and restructure its longstanding Bronx Health Opportunities Partnership-Einstein (Bronx HOPE) program which aims to help students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds enter careers in health and medicine. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Receives Diversity Award

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award – a national honor recognizing U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion – TouroCOM will be featured along with 63 other recipients in the November/December 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This is the fifth year TouroCOM has been named a Health Professions HEED Award recipient. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine: For Third Year in a Row, Einstein Earns National Diversity Award

Albert Einstein College of Medicine has received a 2023 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. Einstein is one of 62 U.S. medical schools, health colleges, and universities selected for this honor, which recognizes institutions that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Learn more.

Two CUNY School of Medicine Alumni Receive AAMC Awards

The CUNY School of Medicine was honored to have two alumni celebrated at the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting (Nov. 3-7). Adina Kalet, MD, MPH, FACP, FAACH, ’82 received the Award for Excellence in Medical Education for helping students improve their communication skills to connect with and empower their patients. Dimitrios Papanagnou, MD, MPH, ’02 was presented with the Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award in recognition of his work in helping students better serve diverse patient populations. Learn more.

Dr. Pamela Ludmer Appointed Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at New York Medical College

Pamela Ludmer, M.D., M.M.E.L., associate dean for curriculum integration and clinical assistant professor of pediatrics and medicine at New York Medical College, has been named as the School of Medicine (SOM) dean for undergraduate medical education and faculty lead for the SOM’s accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Dr. Ludmer will oversee the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education in the planning, implementation, evaluation and oversight of the M.D. curriculum. Learn more.

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo Names Fred Archer Associate Dean for Admissions

Fred D. Archer, III, MD, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University at Buffalo, has been named associate dean for admissions in the Office of Medical Education in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Archer has been a member of the Department of Pediatrics since 2004, when he completed his residency; he then went on to complete a research fellowship in the department. Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Nephrologist and Medical Educator Named RSOM Vice Dean for Research

Susan Hedayati, MD, MS, a physician-scientist, nephrologist, and medical educator, has been named the Vice Dean for Research in the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University. Appointed by Peter Igarashi, MD, Dean of the RSOM, Dr. Hedayati will oversee faculty research within the RSOM’s 25 departments, which includes investigation in many areas of medicine ranging from heart and kidney disease, to cancer, pediatrics, orthopedics, and infectious diseases. Learn more.

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: Western New York Native Returns to the Area to Help Launch UB Master’s Program in Genetic Counseling

In response to the growing demand for genetic counseling services nationally and regionally, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo has hired a program director to launch a master’s degree program in genetic counseling. Lindsey Alico, a Western New York native who, until recently, was co-director of the genetic counseling program at Sarah Lawrence College, the nation’s oldest and largest in the field, has been hired to implement and direct the genetic counseling program at UB. Learn more.

University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: Postdoctoral Spotlight: Erin Bojanek, PhD, BS (’14)

Erin Bojanek, PhD, BS (’14), is an instructor in the Frederick J. and Marion A. Schindler Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab. She was an undergraduate in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department at the University of Rochester and received her doctorate in Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of sensory processing differences in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Learn more.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Introducing the Ferrara Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Simulation

Weill Cornell Medicine Announces New Residence for Graduate and Medical Students, Expanding Scope of Upper East Side Campus

Weill Cornell Medicine is constructing a modern new student residence that, when it opens in 2025, will expand the scope of the institution’s Upper East Side campus and nearly double the existing student residential living space. The new $260 million, 16-story, 173,000-square-foot residence is located on the northwest corner of East 74th Street and York Avenue, four blocks from Weill Cornell Medicine’s existing campus of clinical, research and educational buildings. Learn more.
