The journey toward becoming a doctor is challenging but it can be especially difficult for students from groups historically underrepresented in science and medicine or for those who are socio-economically disadvantaged. They often face extra roadblocks along the way: fewer mentors to guide them toward careers in these fields or a lack of opportunity to volunteer, perform research, build a network, and shadow health professionals. Learn more.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine: Artificial Intelligence Supercharges Learning for Students
 
Lily Ge, a first-year medical student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, is making speedy progress on her lessons. When working to memorize details from her latest anatomy module, she flips through a virtual microscope that automatically pans to the organs she’s currently studying. To help wrap her mind around how different systems in the body interact and connect, she manipulates a virtual 3D body, zooming in to see “what loops behind what,” she says. Albany Medical College: Regional Medical Partnership Provides Medical Students Early Exposure to Patient Care
 
A new partnership between Albany Medical College and several regional health organizations provides a unique opportunity for medical students to gain early clinical exposure. The Introductory Longitudinal Clerkship (ILC), part of the Medical College’s major curriculum modification, places first year medical students with primary care physicians throughout the community. Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine: From Students to Physicians: New Course Prepares Students for Hospital Roles
 
From updating their lifesaving skills on realistic mannequins to learning how to invest in their own wellness, Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s graduating medical students recently gained a better understanding of what to expect at the hospital when they begin their residencies in July. For four weeks this spring, members of the Class of 2023 attended Einstein’s new Transition to Residency course, designed to prepare them for their new roles as practicing physicians. Learn more.

Albany Medical College: New Master of Science in Human Anatomy Aims to Address Shortage
 
Albany Medical College will offer a Master of Science in Human Anatomy (MSHA) beginning in August 2023, aimed to address a nationwide shortage of anatomical science educators. Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: New MDs Set to Start Their Practices
 
The Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University celebrated its 49th Convocation on May 17 by conferring MD degrees to 127 graduates who will begin their first assignments as resident physicians this coming summer. Collectively, they will practice in New York State and 19 other states. Approximately one-quarter of the class will be residents at Stony Brook Medicine locations. Learn more.
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: A Historic Commencement to Remember
 
The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai celebrated its 54th graduating class on Thursday, May 11. A total of 172 degrees were conferred that day, ushering in a new generation of clinicians and researchers. However, the Commencement ceremony also celebrated another historic milestone. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Hooding 2023: The New Doctors Are In!
 
The College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) recently welcomed more than 400 new physicians to the medical profession at Hooding Ceremonies in Old Westbury, N.Y., and Jonesboro, Ark. Weill Cornell Medicine: Celebrating Weill Cornell’s Newest Graduates at Commencement
 
Dr. Christopher Bourne’s journey to Weill Cornell Medicine’s 2023 Commencement was defined by two of his passions: science and social activism – both informed profoundly by the events of 2020. University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: Raven Osborn, Ph.D. Delivers Graduate Student Address at Commencement
 
Raven Osborn, a Translational Biomedical Science Ph.D. graduate, gave the graduate student address at this year’s commencement. Her research focuses on developing network and statistical models to understand how the virus that causes COVID-19 evades the innate immune system. She co-founded and eventually presided over the University of Rochester’s chapter of the Alliance for Diversity in Science and Engineering. Learn more.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine Celebrates Graduating Class of 2023
 
NYU Grossman School of Medicine celebrated the achievements of 111 new doctors at its graduation ceremony on Wednesday, May 17, at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The graduates, bound for residencies at some of the top programs in the country, received their Doctor of Medicine degrees and recited the Hippocratic Oath as they begin their careers. Learn more.
NYU Long Island School of Medicine: Graduating Medical Students Celebrate Becoming Doctors
 
Some of the world’s brightest medical students received their MD degrees on commencement day at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. The graduating class of 25 students became doctors at a ceremony at the Madison Theatre at Molloy University. They were surrounded by family members who have traveled from as far as Gambia, West Africa, to see the Class of 2023 receive their coveted degrees. Learn more.

The class of 2023 graduated from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on Thursday, May 11, after a journey that was not only long, but marked by tribulation. “You witnessed the strong moral character of our Mount Sinai physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Celebrates Class of 2023
 
Graduates of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Class of 2023 were awarded their diplomas last week at festive ceremonies held at both the Middletown and Harlem campuses. The total of 244 graduating physicians crossed the stages at Middletown’s Paramount Theater and Harlem’s Apollo Theater, where they were hooded and conferred degrees while cheering friends, family and faculty wished them well on the next phase of their training. Learn more.
New York Medical College Celebrates the Class of 2023 During 164th Commencement Exercises
 
The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2023 – more than 200 strong — celebrated receiving their medical degrees during Commencement on May 23, after four years of hard work and tremendous resiliency in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The SOM welcomed Machelle H. Allen, M.D., senior vice president and deputy chief medical officer of NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation, as the Commencement speaker, who spoke on finding her purpose in medicine. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Students at the Bench
 
As a break from his medical studies, Michael Argenziano’23 pursued full-time research from March 2021 through February 2022 in the Bartoli Brain Tumor Research Laboratory at VP&S. The first experiment he ran in the lab did not go according to plan. “There were small issues, things that I, as leader of the effort, failed to notice,” says Dr. Argenziano, who graduated in May with MD and MS degrees. Learn more.
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine Graduate Takes Oath at Navy Commissioning Ceremony
 
Congratulations to Sierrah Grigsby, M.D., Ph.D., who was commissioned as a U.S. Navy Lieutenant immediately following Commencement last week. The newly-minted Dr. Grigsby was first commissioned and sworn into the Navy as an ensign in 2020; this is her second Navy Commission, now as an Active Duty Officer, and she assumes her new rank of Lieutenant. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Columbia Stem Cell Labs Open Doors to Next Generation of Scientists 
 
Columbia stem cell researchers opened up their labs last month to 20 8th to 10th grade girls to inspire the next generation of female scientists. “I think the most meaningful part of the day for me was when I saw the girls in lab coats and gloves, asking questions about the scientific experiments they just did or chatting about career choices,” says Barbara Corneo, PhD, associate professor of rehabilitation & regenerative medicine and director of the Columbia Stem Cell Core, who co-hosted the event with Joanna Smeeton, PhD, the H.K. Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo, MSU Students Reflect on Mass Shootings
 
Almost a year to the day after the May 14 mass shooting in Buffalo, a group of 18 medical students gathered for lunch and conversation in the annex of the Hopewell Baptist Church on Fillmore Avenue. The students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University were all familiar with the universal struggles that go along with attending medical school. Learn more.
