New York Medical College: Study Finds USMLE’s Denial of Accommodations Requests by Students with Disabilities Negatively Impacts Medical Schools
 
A new study has shown more than half of medical students with disabilities from a sample of U.S. medical programs were denied accommodations by the organization that administers the United Stated Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1. The international team of researchers, which included lead author of the study Kristina H. Petersen, Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at New York Medical College (NYMC), found these rejections detrimentally impacted both students and the medical schools they attend. Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Five First-Generation College Students in Einstein’s Class of 2022 Share Stories of Resilience

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Celebrates 64th Commencement
 
Albert Einstein College of Medicine honored the Class of 2022 during a graduation ceremony held on Wednesday, May 25 at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City. At the commencement, Einstein conferred 160 M.D. degrees and 21 Ph.D. degrees. In addition, 15 graduates of Einstein’s Medical Scientist Training Program received both an M.D. and a Ph.D. degree. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Medical School Celebrates 2022 Graduates at In-Person Ceremony
 
On May 18, the VP&S Class of 2022 celebrated graduation with friends and families at the first in-person graduation ceremony since the COVID pandemic began more than two years ago. The ceremony honored 148 students who received MD degrees from VP&S and 77 students who received PhD degrees in biomedical sciences from Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Graduates its Newest Physicians
 
Graduates of the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) Class of 2022 recently joined New York Tech’s nearly 111,000 alumni worldwide, which now includes more than 8,727 osteopathic physicians. The medical school’s hooding ceremonies are among New York Tech’s most anticipated days of the year, marking the beginning of the professional careers for graduates from NYITCOM-Long Island and NYITCOM-Arkansas. Learn more.
New York Medical College: Pfizer CEO Addresses Class of 2022 School of Medicine Graduates
 
The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2022 celebrated receiving their medical degrees, after four years of hard work and tremendous resiliency in the face of a worldwide pandemic, on May 26, under a tent behind Sunshine Cottage, with friends and family in attendance, as Commencement returned to an in-person setting for the first time in two years. Learn more.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine Celebrates Class of 2022 Graduation
 
On May 18, 2022, NYU Grossman School of Medicine celebrated its 181st commencement at the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, marking the first in-person ceremony since 2019. The 107 graduates received their Doctor of Medicine degrees and recited the Hippocratic Oath as they set out to begin their careers as physicians. Learn more.
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Voices From the Class of 2022 at Icahn Mount Sinai’s Commencement
 
After two years of remote instruction and Zoom meetings, students graduating from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai celebrated their big day in person. The ceremony was held at Carnegie Hall on May 11, and the energy was palpable—masks could not hide the glee that shone through smiling eyes, and family and friends beamed with pride watching the graduates walk and be hooded by faculty and mentors. Learn more.
Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Launching Medical Careers at a Time of Growing Healthcare Needs
 
This July 132 new physicians will start their residency training at leading healthcare institutions in New York State and around the country. They are graduates from the Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) at Stony Brook University’s Class of 2022, who celebrated their convocation on May 18, the 48th in the school’s history. The RSOM also celebrates that more than 20 percent of this class will be staying at Stony Brook Medicine for their residencies. Learn more.
SUNY Downstate Confers Degrees to More Than 900 Graduates at Commencement Exercises
 
On May 12, 2022, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University conferred degrees to more than 900 graduates of its five colleges and schools, including 184 students from the College of Medicine. Downstate also awarded two new Honorary Doctorates and presented Honorary Doctorates from 2021 and 2020 to seven recipients who could not previously be recognized in person because of the pandemic. Weill Cornell Medicine: Commencement Returns to Carnegie Hall, Marking Joyous Day For Graduates
 
Dr. Meridith Pollie was always interested in math and science, but a volunteer opportunity working and bonding with patients at a long-term health care facility inspired her to dedicate those passions in service of others. On May 19, Dr. Pollie achieved a milestone in her professional journey: graduation from Weill Cornell Medical College. For her and the graduating students in the Class of 2022, commencement is a time to celebrate their accomplishments, reflect on their education and look forward to what comes next. Learn more.
Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Founding Dean Receives Honorary Degree at Zucker School of Medicine’s Eighth Commencement Ceremony – 98 New Doctors and Scientists Conferred
 
The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell celebrated its eighth commencement ceremony on May 9, 2022. Founding Dean Lawrence Smith received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the institution he helped establish, and 98 graduates from the Class of 2022 became the nation’s newest doctors and scientists to join the field of medicine. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Student-Run Free Mental Health Clinic Provides Care for the Uninsured
 
In the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City, residents without access to health insurance are receiving free outpatient mental health care, thanks to an innovative project at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Part of Mount Sinai’s East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP), the student-run clinic offers no-cost, evidence-based mental and behavioral health treatments to patients in need. Learn more.
Albany Medical College: Sarcoma Strong Learning Program Links Students and Patients
 
In the years since he founded Sarcoma Strong, a nonprofit that supports individuals impacted by sarcoma, Matthew DiCaprio, MD, director of Orthopedic Oncology has seen interest grow in the organization’s mission and signature annual event. Part of that support has come from students at Albany Medical College and has grown into a service-learning program that is giving students real-world experience with people impacted by this form of cancer. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: A ‘White Coat’ Graduation
 
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine recently held a “graduation” ceremony for NYC high school students enrolled in their after-school STEM program, MedAchieve. MedAchieve, which runs for two years, teaches high school students the basic foundations of medicine and focuses on the body’s responses to disease and stress. Touro College’s medical students teach the MedAchieve students and manage their curriculum. High school students attend weekly two-hour sessions, which the medical students create based on the material they themselves have been learning. Learn more.
Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Physicians and Medical Students Head Back to School for a Day
 
Thirty Stony Brook Medicine physicians, residents and medical students recently spoke to Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch high school students about careers in healthcare as part of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) annual Doctors Back to School Day. The Renaissance School of Medicine has participated in the annual event since 2017. The AMA created Doctors Back to School Day to help students from underrepresented communities realize that medicine is an attainable profession. Learn more.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Convocation Honors Medical Students’ Accomplishments
 
Students from the Weill Cornell Medical College Class of 2022 were recognized for their outstanding achievements during Convocation on May 18. Medical students received special awards, prizes and certificates, acknowledging their exceptional academic achievement, scholarship, research, teaching and service. Convocation also honors other students, alumni, faculty and staff. Learn more.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine: Cyclist with Traumatic Brain Injury Defies Odds, Graduates from NYU Grossman School of Medicine
 
David Jevotovsky isn’t the same as he was before his accident — but he miraculously feels like he’s back at “100%.” Just five years ago, the 28-year-old, first-year medical resident didn’t know whether he’d be able to walk or talk again — let alone run the New York City Marathon and graduate from NYU Grossman School of Medicine — following a catastrophic, life-altering collision. Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: First Graduate of New PhD Curriculum is Motivated to Impact Cancer Patients
 
Carlos Ortiz-Bonilla, a Puerto Rican native who has been studying science at the University of Rochester for the past seven years, is the first graduate of a new course concentration in cancer biology, spearheaded by the Wilmot Cancer Institute. The cancer biology concentration was developed in partnership with UR’s doctoral programs, such as the Pathology-Cell Biology of Disease graduate program from which Ortiz-Bonilla earned his degree. Learn more.
CUNY School of Medicine: Former NICU Patient Graduates From CUNY School of Medicine
 
Dr. Marcus Mosley, an award-winning member of CUNY School of Medicine’s Class of 2022, shared his journey from a patient in the NICU to becoming a medical school graduate with Good Morning America. Dr. Mosley is committed to reducing healthcare disparities and developing new paradigms in which narrative medicine can be used as a pedagogical tool to promote racial literacy and teach medical students to tackle the social determinants of health. Watch Dr. Mosley on Good Morning America.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Scholarship Recipients Celebrate Benefactors at Fifth Annual Scholarship Donor Reception
 
The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell hosted the fifth annual Scholarship Donor Reception on May 18, 2022. The evening of art, literature, and music was a celebration for all those who have generously funded scholarships for bright and talented students who would otherwise struggle financially or not have the means to afford medical school. Learn more.

CUNY School of Medicine: Dr. Jonathan Woodson Selected to Lead Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
 
Dr. Jonathan Woodson, a vascular surgeon, and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs will lead the nation’s only federal health sciences university – the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences – as its new President. Woodson, a ’77 graduate from the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education program (a pre-cursor to CUNY School of Medicine), was selected by the Secretary of Defense following a nationwide academic search. Learn more.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: “Heroes Made Here”
 
Mayor Eric Adams implored underrepresented minority student doctors-in-training at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in Harlem to “be bold enough to take heathcare in a new direction” when they become practicing physicians. The Mayor’s comments were made at a celebratory fundraising event Tuesday night at TouroCOM to support scholarships for underrepresented minorities (URM) in medicine. TouroCOM is a leader in training URM osteopathic physicians and is committed to increasing the number of URMs in medicine and those working in underserved communities. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Academy of Clinical Excellence Inducts Fifth Class
 
On May 5, 42 clinical faculty members recognized for outstanding patient care were inducted into the Academy of Clinical Excellence (ACE) of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. All ACE inductees are full-time faculty who have served at Columbia for five or more years and exhibit exemplary patient care marked by evidence-based clinical science and deeply compassionate humanism. Learn more.
