New York Medical College Names Neil W. Schluger, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine
 
Neil W. Schluger, M.D., has been appointed dean of the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM). An internationally recognized pulmonologist, Dr. Schluger has served as the Barbara and William Rosenthal Chair of the Department of Medicine and professor of medicine at NYMC and director of medicine at Westchester Medical Center since 2020. He assumes his new duties on August 15. Dr. Schluger succeeds Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., who served as dean since March 2019. Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center Awarded $2.9M NCI Calabresi Training Award
 
The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center (MECC) has received a five-year, $2.9 million grant from the NCI to train physicians and scientists to conduct clinical and translational oncology research, with a special emphasis on investigating and addressing health inequities in the Bronx. Learn more.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Healthcare Leadership Fellows Program Has Built “Leaders of Tomorrow” for More than a Decade
 
Today, Weill Cornell Imaging at NewYork-Presbyterian’s radiology consultation service is a much-used resource among Weill Cornell Medicine physicians. But little more than a decade ago, this program—in which imaging experts provide real-time imaging ordering assistance and oncology-related consultations—was just a back-of-the-envelope idea that Dr. Keith Hentel (M.D. ’98) hoped to explore. Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: Summer Scholars Cohort Arrives at SMD: A Bright Future Ahead
 
The School of Medicine and Dentistry is thrilled to welcome our 2023 Summer Scholars. Working under the direct supervision of faculty mentors, these 30 undergraduate students are joining us from all over the country for the next 10 weeks to gain research experience and professional development opportunities. The Summer Scholars Program is a diversity pathway building program designed to provide research and professional development opportunities to students from groups historically underrepresented in biomedical fields. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Is Launching Medicine’s Next Innovators
 
Medical student Soaptarshi Paul says he “couldn’t be happier” about getting the opportunity to put his computer-science background to use at Einstein. This past fall he and several of his classmates were able to pursue innovation biodesign training in an elective offered to fourth-year students that aims to encourage the development of technologies such as mobile health apps. Learn more.
Albany Medical College: Inaugural Albany Med Health Corp Team Prepares to Enter Medical School
 
Five members of the incoming medical student Class of 2027 have spent the past year working at Albany Medical Center as part of the Albany Med Health Corps. The Health Corp was formed in 2022 to develop a sustainable workforce with the promise of acceptance into the Class of 2027. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Students Step Up in Simulated Emergency
 
On May 18, the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) Ferrara Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Simulation organized and hosted a three-day, multi-agency event aimed at training emergency professionals and medical students to respond to a lifelike mass casualty incident. The event was held in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Nassau County Fire Police Academy, Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), and police and emergency medical service corps from local municipalities. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Three Medical Students at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Named Tillman Scholars
 
In June, the Pat Tillman Foundation announced it had selected three students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to be 2023 Tillman Scholars. The foundation provides scholarship funding to military veterans to pursue higher education and continue their service in the fields of health care, business, law, public service, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), education, and the humanities. Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Elected to National Panel
 
Justice Achonu, MD, an orthopaedic surgery resident at Stony Brook Medicine, is one of four orthopaedic surgeons in the U.S. to be selected for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery’s (ABOS) Resident Advisory Panel. Responsible for providing insight into the resident experience, the panel collaborates with multiple other committees within the ABOS to support the interests of residents throughout the country. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Welcomes Three New Associate Deans in Education Office
 
The Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons has appointed three new associate deans within the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. In the Office of Student Affairs, Jean-Marie Alves-Bradford, MD, will serve as associate dean for student affairs, support & services, while Salila Kurra, MD, will serve as associate dean for student career development. David L. Bell MD, MPH, will serve as associate dean for diversity, inclusion and belonging in the newly renamed Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Learn more.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine: Renowned Surgeon, Researcher & Educator in Robotic Surgery of the Head & Neck Joins NYU Langone Health as New Chair of Otolaryngology
 
Umamaheswar Duvvuri, MD, PhD, a renowned researcher and innovator in advanced, minimally invasive robotic surgery of the head and neck, has been named the Mendik Foundation Professor of Otolaryngology and the new chair of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, effective July 1. Learn more.

CUNY School of Medicine Earns Full Accreditation — Meeting or Exceeding the Highest Standards for Schools of Medicine
 
The City University of New York announced that the CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY Med) at The City University of New York has been granted full accreditation. Dean Carmen Renée Green, MD received the news and proudly shared this achievement with the entire CUNY Med community saying, “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the accreditation process, as this is truly a team effort. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: New Play by Columbia Scientist Explores Early Days of HIV Epidemic
 
With the COVID-19 pandemic in our not-too-distant past, much of the action of “Love + Science,” a new off-Broadway play written by David J. Glass, MD, adjunct professor of genetics & development at Columbia University, may feel eerily familiar to theatergoers. The play takes place during the earliest days of the HIV epidemic, when the disease was still referred to as gay-related immune deficiency (GRID) and wasn’t believed to be a communicable virus. Learn more.
New York Medical College Faculty Return to Ukraine to Train Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons
 
Manoj T. Abraham, M.D., FACS, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology, and Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., professor of clinical otolaryngology and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, returned to Ukraine in April for a 10-day mission trip to care for the wounded Ukrainians and train local doctors in complex face and neck reconstructive surgeries at a military hospital in Lviv. Learn more.
