Weill Cornell Medicine: NIH Awards Education Grant for Weill Cornell Medicine’s First Post-Baccalaureate Research Program

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health has awarded Weill Cornell Medicine a $1.8 million five-year grant to fund a new post-baccalaureate research education program that aims to cultivate scientists and physician-scientists who hail from groups traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine. Learn more.

NYU Grossman School of Medicine & Sarah Lawrence College Launch Graduate Genomics Degree Program

NYU Langone’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and Sarah Lawrence College announced the launch of a master’s program in genome health analysis (GHA). Building on the strengths of both institutions, the new program focuses on analyses of patient genomes—the complete sets of genetic information in human cells. Learn more.

Norton College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University: Upstate Medical Students Teach and Learn at InclusiveU

Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. is the best hour of the week say three second-year medical students at Upstate Medical University Norton College of Medicine. That’s when they cross the street from Upstate to Syracuse University and teach a course on “Health Advocacy” to students in SU’s InclusiveU. InclusiveU is a program that brings together students of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities who want to experience college life in an inclusive setting. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Northwell Health MLK Scholarships Propel Three MSPP Students Towards Their Dreams

Three high school students who also attend the Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP) at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell are one step closer to realizing their dream careers in science and healthcare after each receiving a $2,500 scholarship from Northwell Health’s Center for Equity of Care. The awards were presented during the 54th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Memorial Program held virtually on January 12, 2024. Learn more.

New York Medical College Student Secures Spot in Westchester Biosciences Accelerator Program

Ariel Yusupov, M.S., SOM Class of 2026, is one of just 12 budding entrepreneurs chosen to participate in the Westchester County Biosciences Accelerator Program this year. Yusupov was selected for the highly competitive program for his biotechnology startup F.I.G. (Factor Induced Gene) Therapeutics, which developed a gene therapy, currently focused on prostate cancer, that utilizes over-expressing transcription factors in cancer to drive a multi-modal therapeutic. Learn more.

University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry Student Spotlight: John Gonzalez-Amoretti

John Gonzalez-Amoretti is a 4th year Neuroscience graduate student. Gonzalez-Amoretti received his degree in Chemistry from Universidad Ana G. Mendez in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. He is currently working in the lab of Adam Snyder, PhD, in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department at the University of Rochester where he is studying visual attention and how the brain uses information about an object to find its location. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem: Heartwarming Reunion: TouroCOM Maintenance Worker Treated by School Alum

When Dr. Priyal Bhagat, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Harlem alum class of ’17, entered the examining room at his medical practice in the Bronx recently, he didn’t recognize the gentleman waiting for him. “I thought he was one of my orthopedic patients. CUNY School of Medicine Graduates—and Welcomes—Cohorts of Diverse and Many First-Gen Physician Assistant Students

More than half of the 31 students graduating from CUNY School of Medicine’s MS in Physician Assistant Studies program were the first in their families to attend college and then go on to earn a graduate degree. The commencement ceremony was held Tuesday, January 9, and on Thursday, January 11, CUNY Medicine hosted the annual PA White Coat ceremony for 30 students joining the program. In her opening remarks, Dean Carmen Renée Green, MD, referenced how the Class of 2026 reflects the diversity that CUNY Medicine is known for, with students who speak a dozen different languages in addition to English, and some speak two or more languages, including Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, French, Greek, Indi, Portuguese, Spanish, Twi, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Yoruba.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Dr. Bernhard Kühn Named Chief of the Division of Cardiology in Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital

Dr. Bernhard Kühn, a leading physician-scientist who specializes in heart regeneration, has been named chief of the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital, effective Feb. 1. New York Medical College: Sowing Seed Strains and Fighting the Flu

Each year, influenza takes on a different shape. In response, so does the vaccine that protects the world’s population against this highly contagious respiratory virus. It takes methodical testing, meticulous genetics, and many cartons of chicken eggs to nurture traces of isolated human samples into the strains that form the basis for the world’s annual flu vaccine supply.
