Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: When Omicron Struck, Mount Sinai’s Students Signed Up to Help
 
Several days after Christmas, second-year medical student Arman Azad met with top administrators at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to plan how he and fellow students could help the Mount Sinai Health System handle the crush of COVID-19 patients falling sick from the Omicron variant. Learn more.
 
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: “Education is Key.” Neuroscientist Nathan A. Smith Returns in Leadership Role
 
Nathan A. Smith, M.S. (’10), Ph.D. (’13), is returning to the University of Rochester as an associate professor of Neuroscience and associate dean for Equity and Inclusion in Research and Research Education in the School of Medicine and Dentistry, pending approval of the provost. The first Black graduate of the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Rochester, Smith sees his return to campus as a way to make sure the bright minds in underserved communities have equal education opportunities. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Prevailing Over Prejudice
 
Over the past several years, Dr. Cristina Gonzalez has published 16 papers on the topic of implicit bias. Most recently, her 2020 Academic Medicine paper outlined the curriculum she and her team designed and piloted as an elective for first-year medical students. It is the first published curriculum that provides students with opportunities to practice and develop skills that help them address biases in their encounters with patients and in the learning environment. Learn more.
Albany Medical College: Assistant Dean Fosters Open Learning Environment for Med Students
 
During their four years preparing to become doctors, medical students learn about anatomy, diseases, health inequity and an array of other biomedical topics. In the midst of it, they must also learn to pivot from classroom-based academic studies to clinical situations. New York Medical College: Children’s Environmental Health Subject of Summer Program and new Area of Concentration
 
Due to differences in behavior and biology, children are often more vulnerable to pollutants and other environmental factors that lead to a wide array of common chronic diseases and other health issues, including asthma and cancer, making it integral that pediatric health care professionals are well prepared to recognize and address environmental aspects to disease. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Twins on a Mission to Serve
 
Last summer, TouroCOM Middletown twins Kimberly and Bridget Brafi were excited to be starting the school’s DO and master’s programs, respectively. But there was a wrinkle: they needed permission to skip orientation because they’d already committed to hosting a mentoring session in Virginia for youth on the topic of career readiness. Learn more.
New York Medical College: Keerthana Jayaseelan, SOM Class of 2023, Hopes to One Day Give Back to her Hometown in India
 
Born in the rural Indian town of Theni, Keerthana Jayaseelan, a member of the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2023 at New York Medical College, and her family did not have much access to quality medical care. After her family emigrated to the United States for an opportunity of better education, Ms. Jayaseelan has made it her mission to become a physician and eventually give back to her hometown helping those who are underserved in India. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: Saluting NYITCOM’s Military Matches
 
Future physicians from NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) Class of 2022 have matched into U.S. military residencies. Upon completing medical school, physicians must complete a residency training program and obtain a medical license to practice in the United States and become board certified in a specialty. Learn more.
Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Humans of Zucker: Muhammad Shoaib
 
Muhammad Shoaib is a sixth-year MD/PhD student at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Muhammad’s work has earned him accolades that most students could only dream of: he’s received a $50,000 research grant, has been involved in over thirty scientific publications, and, most recently, was named Nassau County Medical Society’s Member of the Month. Learn more.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: Shooting for the Moon
 
Sarah Loftus, OMS-II at TouroCOM Middletown, is a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and president of the school’s Armed Forces Medical Club. Recently she organized and moderated a well—attended webinar for students with NASA Astronaut and Colonel Andrew Morgan, an astronaut on the International Space Station. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: CUIMC Faculty Named AAAS Fellows
 
Cancer researcher Michael M. Shen and exposome pioneer Gary W. Miller were named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society, for their contributions to science. Barbara Pro, MD, a national leader in lymphoma research and care, has been named clinical director of the lymphoma program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
