Albert Einstein College of Medicine Hosts NYS Health Commissioner McDonald for Announcement of $5 Million for Diversity Programs

On July 17, Albert Einstein College of Medicine hosted New York State Department of Health Commissioner James McDonald, M.D., as he announced $4.89 million in funding for the Diversity in Medicine programs managed by Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY). The funding supports 18 pathway programs across the state that aim to increase physician workforce diversity and eliminate health disparities. Learn more.

Norton College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University Announces First-Ever Upstate Say Yes Scholarship for Full Tuition and Housing to its Norton College of Medicine

Upstate Medical University has announced the creation of its first-ever Upstate Say Yes Scholarship that will provide financial support to include four years of tuition to medical school, housing in Upstate’s Geneva Tower and a yearly $5,000 stipend for the four-year medical degree path. The total scholarship gift will exceed $240,000 for the four-year degree program. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell  Marks 15th Anniversary of High School Pipeline Program

 On July 1, 2024, The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell welcomed its fifteenth class of Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP) students. With the mission to provide an educational foundation and pathway into healthcare and medicine for high school students, the 4-week summer program provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to discover their potential alongside the guidance of the Zucker School of Medicine faculty and students. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Offers Summer STEM Opportunities for Hundreds of Students

Each summer, classrooms that were emptied at the end of the spring semester are filled again with students learning about biomedical sciences. However, instead of being medical or graduate students, these students are younger secondary school and college students sometimes experiencing STEM for the first time. Multiple Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons education opportunities, known as pipeline programs or “pathways,” help prepare students for a variety of possible career paths to pursue after high school and give college students the chance to learn from and work directly with Columbia’s most renowned researchers and scientists. Learn more.

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: New Curriculum Gives Jacobs School Students Opportunities to Experience the World of Medicine ‘Well Beyond’ the Classroom

In 1980, it took about seven years for medical knowledge to double; these days it’s estimated to take just a few months. Experienced physicians find keeping up with this cascade of new medical knowledge an ongoing challenge. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Launches New Educational Curriculum

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, a top ranked medical school in the U.S.,  known for its strong culture of innovation and scholarship, is launching a re-envisioned curriculum for MD students.  The curriculum, named ASCEND, will aim to transform the acquisition of knowledge while retaining the school’s tradition of early immersion in scholarly opportunities. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: Tackling Global Health on Summer Mission to Peru

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: Indigenous Students Learn About Health Care Careers From the Jacobs School and the Seneca Nation Education Department

It was August 2021 and Amanda Bahgat had just started medical school at the University at Buffalo. She was sitting in the required “Medicine and Society” course listening to the professor, a physician of Indigenous descent, who was lecturing on childhood trauma and the social-biological determinants of health. Then he asked the class if anyone was of Native American descent. “Nobody raised their hand,” Bahgat recalls. “I was shocked.” Learn more.

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine: White Coat Ceremony Celebrates Aspiring Doctors Entering Long Island Medical School

They come from all walks of life and have overcome many obstacles to achieve their dream of becoming doctors. Now that dream is one step closer to reality as 24 aspiring physicians received their official lab coats during the White Coat Ceremony at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, marking the beginning of their career in medicine. “These future doctors come from a variety of backgrounds, but have one thing in common—a true passion to serve the community as primary care physicians,” said Gladys M. New York Medical College: School of Medicine Class of 2028 Marks Start of Medical School Journey

Members of the New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2028 marked their first significant moment as medical students at NYMC during the annual White Coat Ceremony on July 24. Taking place on the beautiful grounds of Caramoor Center for the Music and the Arts in Katonah, New York, the ceremony is an annual tradition for SOM first-year students during which they don their white coats for the first time and pledge an oath they developed as a class to emphasize the professional and humanistic qualities of a physician they consider most important. Learn more.

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Master’s Commencement: Celebrating Mount Sinai’s Outstanding Class of Graduating Master’s Students

Amid loud cheers and applause, master’s students at Mount Sinai’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences celebrated their many accomplishments—and the promise they hold for advancing science, health, and medicine—at a Commencement ceremony on Friday, June 21. New York Medical College: Medical Student and Aspiring Entrepreneur Nadia Ambarsom Pursues Dual Dreams

CUNY School of Medicine: Five First-Year Medicine Students Selected to Build Projects That Center on Empathy and Compassion

The CUNY School of Medicine is one of several institutions participating in the year-long mentored Compassion Ambassador Program (CAmP) led by the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Five CUNY Medicine students are advancing a wide range of projects, including various elements of a human rights clinic for asylum seekers, the preservation of culture of underrepresented medical students through cooking, and confronting anti-Blackness in medical education. Learn more.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Felise Milan, M.D., Named Inaugural Assistant Dean for Learner Assessment and Clinical Competencies

Felise Milan, M.D., a nationally recognized expert in clinical medical education and assessment, has been appointed the inaugural assistant dean for learner assessment and clinical competencies at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Milan, a professor of medicine and an attending physician at Montefiore, has been a leader in clinical education at Einstein for more than two decades, most recently serving as the inaugural chair of Einstein’s competency-based medical education and student assessment committee. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Two VP&S Researchers Named HHMI Investigators

Samuel Sternberg and Dmitriy Aronov, scientists at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, are among 26 leading researchers named as new investigators of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. HHMI investigators are established scientists who are working to push their research fields into new areas of inquiry. The appointments are highly sought after and provide each new investigator with stable and generous support for several years (this year, each new investigator will receive approximately $11 million over a seven-year term, which may be extended indefinitely pending scientific review). Learn more.

CUNY Medicine Expert on Student Mental Health Discusses the Benefits of Sports Psychiatry With Forbes

As athletes at all levels gear up for fall sports, Victor Schwartz, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Wellness and Student Life at the CUNY School of Medicine, explained to Forbes the importance of sports psychiatry. In addition to helping individual athletes cope in highly stressful environments, Dr. Schwartz, who is also a consultant to the NBA’s Mind Health Program, said, “Sports psychiatrists can also help address team and interpersonal dynamics, which can be intense and complicated in highly competitive environments and can help teams establish systems of care that address athletes’ special needs successfully.” Learn more.

Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Recognized as Pediatric Innovators, the Only Long Island Hospitals to Receive the Honor

Stony Brook University Hospital and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital are two of only nine hospitals in New York State that have been acknowledged as Pediatric Innovators in the Always Ready for Children Pediatric Recognition Program and for having dedicated Emergency Department Pediatric Care Coordinators. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) has received the 2024 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: SBUH Recognized Again as a U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital

Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized as a 2024-25 Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, ranking in the top 15 in New York State. SBUH climbed to a No. 12 ranking overall out of more than 153 hospitals statewide, up from No. 13 last year.
