NYU Long Island School of Medicine Receives $200 Million Gift from Kenneth & Elaine Langone
 
A transformative $200 million gift to NYU Long Island School of Medicine will ensure generations of medical students continue to receive a tuition-free, top-quality education focused on primary care. The gift from Kenneth and Elaine Langone extends the school’s guarantee of Full-Tuition Scholarships to every student, regardless of need, in perpetuity. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Medical Pipeline Students Learn How to Identify Drug Overdose and Other Medical Emergencies and Take Life-Saving Action
 
While many high school and college students are taking a break from their studies this summer, those enrolled in the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell’s pipeline programs are learning how to save lives. On Friday, July 14, 2023, a diverse class of 12 rising first- and second-year college students received hands-on Narcan training, CPR, and basic First Aid skills at Northwell Health’s Center for Emergency Medical Services in Lake Success. Learn more.
Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo Student Gets to Work With the Buffalo Bills’ Medical Team This Summer
 
Mohamed Bah, a rising third-year student at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, is looking forward to working with the widely lauded Buffalo Bills medical team in a clinical rotation in August. Bah is one of just 19 medical students in the U.S. chosen to be part of the National Football League Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative. Learn more.
NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine: Summer Mentoring Program for High School Students Resumes at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island
 
While some high school students are enjoying views of the beach for summer vacation, students from two Hempstead high schools will be spending a month on a hospital campus exploring potential opportunities in healthcare. In an effort to reach out to underserved communities, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island has launched its Summer Mentoring program for a second season. Learn more.

New York Medical College: Students Ease Transition to Medical School During Pre-Matriculation Program
 
Members of the School of Medicine Class of 2027 at New York Medical College (NYMC) had the opportunity to ease their transition to medical school during the Pre-Matriculation Program, held in July, just prior to orientation. The two-week program, now in its third year, which included sessions on study techniques, personal wellness and careers and featured faculty and student speakers from across NYMC, has gotten high marks from students who have participated. Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: Meet the Next Generation of Cancer Researchers 
 
Education is a hallmark of an academic cancer center, and Wilmot Cancer Institute is building a pipeline of research trainees with fresh energy and a special interest in cancer. A new Cancer Biology curriculum is fueling the pipeline as it kindles its way across the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, gaining momentum with each new crop of students. Learn more.

Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at University at Buffalo: For These Students, Medical School is a Family Affair
 
First-year medical students often hear that finding a study partner can be helpful in getting through the rigorous curriculum. This week, several first-year students at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo are starting off with a “study buddy” they’ve known all their lives. Three pairs of twins — plus another pair of siblings — are among the 184 students in the Jacobs School’s Class of 2027. Learn more.
New York Medical College School of Medicine Class of 2027 Marks Start of Medical Education at White Coat Ceremony
 
Members of the School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2027 at New York Medical College (NYMC) marked a milestone in their medical education as they donned their white coats for the first time during the White Coat Ceremony, which was held at the concert hall at SUNY Purchase on July 28. Learn more.
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Middletown Class of 2027 on the Way to Becoming Physicians
 
A total of 135 students received their white coats in a ceremony at Middletown’s Paramount Theater on Monday signifying their entrance into medical school at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Middletown campus this fall. Some 11,000 students applied to the college. Executive Dean Dr. Ken Steier said the ceremony signifies their entrance into their field of medical study. Learn more.
Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell Welcomes the Class of 2027
 
On Monday, July 24, 2023, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell welcomed its incoming Class of 2027, marking a major milestone for the diverse group of future doctors. Orientation week is an opportunity for first-year medical students to become acclimated to the school’s facilities, meet faculty and administrators and make new friends before their first day of class, Monday, July 31, which begins their training to become certified emergency medical technician. Learn more.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Medical Student Receives the ASH Medical Student Physician-Scientist Award
 
Sarah Qureshy, a fourth-year medical student at Weill Cornell Medical College, has been selected by the American Society of Hematology (ASH) as one of four medical students nationwide to receive the 2023-24 ASH Medical Student Physician-Scientist (PhySci) Award. The ASH PhySci Awards support first-, second- and third-year medical students looking to gain experience in hematology research under the mentorship of an ASH member and to learn more about the specialty. Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: From Ukraine to URMC: A Residency of Resilience 
 
Ulyana Khaba, MD, has been a practicing cardiologist for over 10 years, working at Lviv City Clinical Hospital in Ukraine. She was living her ideal life: she has a wonderful husband, Taras, and they have two sons, ages nine and 13. Ukraine was home, where her life was centered until nearly 18 months ago, when Russian attacks convinced her to relocate her family. Based on her years of experience, you might be surprised to learn that she is now a first-year resident in the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Learn more.
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: A Medical Student Who Believes in the Healing Power of Music
 
Iain Forrest, PhD, is an MD-PhD student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has been studying medicine since 2018. But he has been practicing healing since he was 10. That’s when his music teacher wheeled a cart into his fourth-grade classroom and asked every student to pick an instrument. This was his introduction to the cello. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Profile: Alan Wong
 
Everything came full circle for Alan Wong (D.O. ’03, M.B.A. ’03). In high school, he volunteered as a researcher at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Then, right out of medical school, his first rotation was at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, N.Y., where he now serves as chief medical officer and senior vice president for medical affairs, overseeing operations across several departments. Learn more.

Albany Medical College: Three Faculty Members Take on New College Leadership Roles
 
Albany Medical College has promoted three members of its faculty to new roles. Shellie Asher, MD, has been appointed associate dean for Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official, replacing Dr. Joel Bartfield, who will retire July 1 after 32 years. As such, Dr. Asher will oversee all accredited residency and fellowship programs, ensuring compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Diversity Week: Toward a More Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Future
 
In late April, Einstein hosted its inaugural Diversity Week, which highlights diversity in medicine and science. The initiative was sponsored by the office of diversity and inclusion and featured daily lectures over the course of the week. The 9th Annual Duvivier Lecture, which was co-sponsored by the department of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health, kicked off Diversity Week and was followed by four additional speakers. Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Advisory Deans Cultivate Community Through New House Program
 
At the start of the 2022-23 academic year, Prashanth “PK” Kumar’25 and eight VP&S classmates attended a dinner with two dozen first-year students. The gathering, organized by the VP&S Office of Students Affairs, served as an icebreaker before the annual VP&S schoolwide boat cruise along the Hudson River. A few months later—before members of the Class of 2026 made their way to Broadway for showings of “Hadestown,” “Lion King,” “Phantom of the Opera,” and “Wicked”—the same group gathered for dinner in Harlem. Learn more.
Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Stony Brook University Hospital Recognized for Sustainability Leadership and Environmental Excellence
 
Practice Greenhealth has once again recognized Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) as a national leader in environmental sustainability. As a result of SBUH’s leadership, ingenuity and hard work through its sustainability efforts and initiatives, the hospital has earned this year’s Greenhealth Emerald Award.
