NYU Grossman School of Medicine: Early Graduation at NYU Grossman School of Medicine Sends New Doctors to Join COVID-19 Fight
On Friday, April 3, 52 students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine graduated more than a month early in a virtual ceremony, joined by their families and the school’s leaders. NYU Grossman School of Medicine was the first medical school in the nation to offer early graduation to fourth-year medical students to help treat people with 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: To Increase Physician Ranks, Columbia Medical Students Will Graduate Early
Medical students in their final year at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons will graduate a month early and be offered temporary employment at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to help with the COVID-19 pandemic. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Call for Increased Need for Physicians is Answered by an Early Graduation
Medical students in their final year at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell will graduate early and have the option to begin temporary employment at Northwell Health hospitals to assist in the fight against the COVID-19 virus before beginning their residencies over the summer. Responding to a directive from Governor Andrew Cuomo allowing graduating med students to practice immediately due to the ongoing pandemic, the 102 members of the Class of 2020 will now graduate on April 10, a month ahead of schedule. CUNY School of Medicine Toasts its First Class of Graduates
The students were slated to be the inaugural class of the CUNY School of Medicine at The City College of New York when they joined the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program directly from area high schools in 2013. The program is an entry point of an accelerated undergraduate biomedical curriculum that would seamlessly transition them through their medical school training culminating in a Bachelor of Science and an accredited medical degree in seven years. After four years of hard work and countless contributions, Albany Medical College’s Class of 2020 recently learned where they will continue their medical training as resident physicians after they graduate. With the Covid-19 pandemic bringing normal life to a screeching halt across Western New York, students in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo have found a new way to help out in the community. Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Fourth-Year Medical Students Join the Fight Against COVID-19
As more and more COVID-19 patients pour into hospitals around New York City, fourth-year Einstein medical students are volunteering for a program to help healthcare workers cope with the increasing demand for care. Launched just one week ago, the program started with four students who were assigned to a special floor at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), where elective surgeries have been canceled to accommodate the influx of adult COVID-19 patients. Albert Einstein College of Medicine Students Team Up to Create Face Masks and Face Shields
As the COVID-19 crisis grew during March, several third-year Einstein medical students got together to see how they could help with the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) in New York. So, equipped with laptops and phones and determined to make a difference, they reached out to each other and to other medical students across New York City to figure out how they could obtain PPE that would help protect hospital workers from the COVID-19 virus. When reports predicted looming shortages of masks, gloves, and supplies, New York Tech students, including those in the Student Veterans Organization and NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, wouldn’t let health care workers go unprotected. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Hospital of Brooklyn Designation by Governor Cuomo as a COVID-19 Only Facility
The United States has surpassed Italy and China with over 100,000 coronavirus cases; more than 52,000 cases are in New York State, nearly 30,000 are in New York City, and more than 7,000 cases are in Brooklyn. SUNY Downstate is answering Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s directive to prepare University Hospital of Brooklyn as a COVID-19 only facility. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Field Hospital Opens at Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex
A field hospital for patients with mild COVID-19 symptoms will open next week at Columbia’s Baker Athletics Complex at 218th Street in northern Manhattan adjacent to the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, in partnership with Columbia University and city and state officials, have converted a heated dome at the complex into a field hospital capable of treating as many as 280 patients. New York Medical College and Touro College and University System Host Second COVID-19 Symposium
More than 720 participants tuned in to the second COVID-19 symposium, “What we know. What we don’t know. What you need to know,” via an online webinar on March 30 when there were more than 145,000 reported cases in the U.S. Although the title remained appropriate, it was a stark difference from the first such symposium on January 31, when there were 200 people in attendance at the Touro College Midtown Manhattan campus and only seven reported cases in the U.S. Read the full article on the COVID-19 presentation and view the video.
