Albert Einstein College of Medicine: A Call to Standardize Abortion Education Across U.S. Medical Schools
 
The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will undoubtedly restrict the reproductive healthcare that many physicians can provide. Critically, it will also threaten the clinical knowledge and skills of the next generation of physicians. Einstein’s medical students firmly believe that any comprehensive reproductive health education includes abortion. Learn more.
New York Medical College School of Medicine Launches New Medical Education Curriculum
 
The School of Medicine (SOM) Class of 2026 will be the first class to experience the new medical education curriculum launched this year at New York Medical College (NYMC). The new curriculum, which was developed by a broad representation of SOM administration, faculty and students, integrates basic science and clinical course content during the first eighteen months of medical education, while also allowing students to enter clerkships much earlier in their education. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Project Medical Education Returns to CUIMC
 
This past August, after a two-year hiatus, Project Medical Education (PME) returned to Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Hosted by the Office of Government & Community Affairs, PME invites local residents, community leaders, policy makers, and others to spend the day on campus and learn about the day-to-day activities at CUIMC. The Columbia PME is part of a national effort led by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to educate elected officials and others about academic medicine. Learn more.
New York Medical College: Transformative Education Leadership Program Launched This Summer With Positive Results
 
The Transformative Education Leadership Program (TELP) launched its inaugural standardized patient encounters this summer to unanimously positive feedback from students, faculty and standardized patients. TELP was created by NYMC medical students, Lior Levy and Redab Alnifaidy, both SOM Class of 2023, with the goal of building thoughtful, action-taking and anti-racist leaders and to develop skills to address microaggressions. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons White Coat Ceremony Welcomes Class of 2026
 
On Aug. 19 at The Armory, the 140 members of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) Class of 2026 gathered for the White Coat Ceremony, an annual event at which Columbia’s incoming medical students are cloaked in white coats by faculty members for the first time. Of the members of the entering class, 31% belong to groups underrepresented in medicine, surpassing the record-breaking 28% in last year’s Class of 2025. Learn more.
Weill Cornell Medicine: White Coat Ceremony Ushers in Class of 2026
 
Rana Barghout didn’t realize the power of her story until she shared it. It had been five years since she experienced homelessness, living in a car for months with her two younger siblings after a tragic house fire left her parents in the hospital. Her family was able to eventually find a place, until her father, who worked in construction, could fix up their original home. But for years she felt ashamed of this part of her past, keeping it a secret. Then, as a senior at Amherst College, where she was studying neuroscience, she was selected to give a TED Talk about her experience. It changed her perspective. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Welcomes the Class of 2026
 
The College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (NYITCOM) newest medical students received their first white coats during two days of celebration in Long Island, N.Y., and Jonesboro, Ark. The annual White Coat Ceremonies mark the beginning of NYITCOM students’ medical school journey. In receiving their coats, the incoming class prepared to fill the shoes of the Class of 2022, which had a combined match rate of 99.5 percent; graduates earned impressive residencies at institutions such as The Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, and Emory University, among many others. Learn more.
University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry: The White Coat Ceremony: 110 Students Mark the Beginning of Medical School
 
A joyous celebration was held in the Larry and Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center Friday, August 12. The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry class of 2026, made up of 110 medical students, received their white coats during the traditional ceremony that marks the beginning of medical school for these future doctors. The 17th annual Robert L. & Lillian H. Brent White Coat Ceremony was captured by University of Rochester photographer J. Adam Fenster. Learn more.

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ Class of 2026 celebrated entry into medical school with a traditional White Coat Ceremony Aug. 5 at Kleinhans Music Hall. The new class consists of 180 medical students and four students who are starting in the MD-PhD program. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine: What I Learned From my Medical Mission Trip to Help Ukrainian Refugees in April
 
On April 1, 2022, as a third-year osteopathic medical student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, the team from Global Hands arrived in Poland with the sole aim of providing care to Ukrainian refugees on a two-week medical mission trip. Since her return, the student had an opportunity to reflect on her experience and on the many lessons she learned while interacting with refugees and medical professionals from across the globe. Learn more.
New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Profile: Siddhant Kulkarni
 
Siddhant Kulkarni (B.S. ’15, M.S. ’19, D.O. ’19) wants to take diagnostic radiology, the medical specialization of obtaining images of the inside of the body, several paces ahead. A fourth-year resident in diagnostic radiology at Northwell Health, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y., Kulkarni is looking at something more precise. Interventional radiology is focused on minimally invasive procedures, including traditional open surgeries being done with very small incisions. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Dígame Bienvenidos Welcomes Students to Washington Heights
 
One week before classes began this month, many incoming medical and dental students were already immersed in Washington Heights, the community where they will live, learn, and give back. The students arrived on campus early to participate in Dígame Bienvenidos, a four-day orientation program that introduces new students to the history, culture, and contemporary issues of the medical center’s local community. Learn more.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Harlem’s MedAchieve Wins Diversity STEM Award For Inspiring Youth
 
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) Harlem campus has received the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. They have received the award for its after-school program serving New York City high school students interested in careers in medicine or other health sciences. The award marks the fourth year in a row TouroCOM has received the STEM award from the magazine, which is the largest and oldest publication reporting on diversity and inclusion in higher education. Learn more.

Albany Medical College: Dr. Dzifa Kpodzo Selected for SBAS Leadership Development Institute
 
Dzifa Kpodzo, MD, chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, is one of six surgeons selected for the next class of the Leadership and Faculty Development Institute Program of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS). The two-year program offers mentoring and leadership training, with the goal of increasing the number of minority faculty in academic surgery and ensuring their career progression by creating a network of leaders in the field. Learn more.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology recognized Andrea Vambutas, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, with the 2022 Women in Otolaryngology (WIO) Helen K. Krause Trailblazer Award. Learn more.
