Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Medical Students Develop Curriculum to Shine a Light on the Injustices of Racial Segregation in Health Care
 
Medical students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai are challenging a traditional model of medical education they say omits a critical ingredient: preparing students for the experience of segregation within health care. Segregated care, write the authors in an article published in AMA Journal of Ethics, is care that is segregated by insurance status, and therefore, in effect, by race. Learn more.

When she talks about why she wants to be a doctor, Sydney Johnson tells the story of how she and her twin sister came into this world. Sydney was supposed to be delivered by C-section, since she was in a breech position, but somehow, regrettably, that didn’t happen. The physician decided to deliver both babies naturally. Angela de Caprariis-Salerno never dreamed of getting accolades for her “OSCE” winning performances. The 77-year-old retired pharmacist turned actor from Garden City has played many intense roles as part of the Observed Structured Clinical Experience, or OSCE, program at NYU Long Island School of Medicine. In her newfound career, de Caprariis-Salerno poses as different standardized patients to help teach medical students. Learn more.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Profile: Viktoria Taranto
 
While on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean from her homeland, Ukrainian-born Viktoria Taranto is working to provide dermatological consultation services to people of her native country. The College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) Émigré Physicians Program student is training with Long Island-based dermatologist Navin Arora (D.O. ’04) and offering virtual dermatology consultations and treatment recommendations for Ukrainian citizens and refugees unable to access specialized care in their home country. Learn more.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine Student Awarded Sarnoff Research Fellowship
 
In high school, third-year medical student Nick Forelli could not have dreamed of winning a cardiovascular research fellowship or working in a state-of-the-art laboratory. An all-around athlete who played football and baseball and was into weight training, he worked afternoons and weekends as a personal fitness trainer at an athletic club in Huntington Station, NY. Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell: Dr. Robert Roswell Recognized at 2023 Critical Care Congress
 
On January 21, 2023, Robert O. Roswell, MD, FACC, FACP associate dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and professor of cardiology and science education, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, was recognized at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) 2023 Critical Care Congress in San Francisco, CA, for his commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in critical care. Dr. Roswell had the privilege of delivering the Max Harry Weil Honorary Lecture, opening the conference, which was attended by critical care professionals from around the globe, seeking the latest knowledge, research, tools, and technologies that improve patient care. Learn more.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: Columbia Patient Safety Leader Jason Adelman Recognized with National Award
 
Each year, medical errors are responsible for tens of thousands of patient deaths. Although the exact number is difficult to quantify, at least one in five people in the United States say they have experienced a medical error while receiving health care. New York Medical College: Steven Lansman, M.D., Ph.D., to Lead Department of Surgery at New York Medical College
 
Steven Lansman, M.D., Ph.D., has been named Chair of the Department of Surgery at New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine and Director of the Department of Surgery at Westchester Medical Center (WMC). He has served as interim surgery chair and director since November 2021. Dr. Lansman, who joined the NYMC faculty in 2005, has a long and distinguished record of accomplishments, including more than 150-peer reviewed publications and playing an instrumental role in the launch of the cardiac transplant program at WMC. Learn more.
Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Dr. Sandeep Mallipattu Elected to the ASCI
 
Sandeep Mallipattu, MD, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, is among the newest members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and will be officially inducted on April 21, 2023. Learn more.

Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell Bolsters Compassion and Humility in Our Future Doctors During the Opioid Epidemic Week
 
Medical students at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell learned how to address substance use as part of routine patient care during the school’s annual Core Learning Opioid Epidemic Themed Week, held on January 23-26, 2023. According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, opioids were involved in over 80,000 of 107,000 fatal drug overdoses in 2021. The Opioid Epidemic Themed Week helps bring awareness to the public health crisis of opioid misuse and addiction and instills future healthcare professionals with the qualities and skills necessary to treat patients with kindness, compassion and care. Learn more.
Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University: Thank a Resident & Fellow Day at Stony Brook University Hospital
 
Staff and visitors were welcomed to the hospital with Thank a Resident & Fellow stickers on February 1st to spread the word about Resident and Fellow Appreciation Month. The month of February will boast an array of wellness events for Stony Brooks 761 Residents and Fellows that are training in one of the 67 programs. Along with events, spotlights have been displayed in the hospital and broadcasted across Stony Brook Medicine locations to show off achievements by 35 of these Residents and Fellows. New York Medical College Faculty Treat Ukrainians During Mission Trip
 
Two New York Medical College (NYMC) faculty — Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., professor of clinical otolaryngology and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at NYMC and director of otolaryngology at Westchester Medical Center, and Manoj T. Abraham, M.D., F.A.C.S, clinical associate professor of otolaryngology, traveled to war-torn Ukraine to treat patients at a regional hospital in Ivanko-Frankivsk in Western Ukraine as part of a mission trip. Learn more.
Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons: How Columbia OT Students Are Helping Local Kids With Disabilities
 
For 2-year-old Bella, a play table created by Columbia occupational therapy students is not just a platform where she can play with her favorite toys. It’s an integral part of her therapy that allows her to be a kid at the same time. Bella has extensive hypotonia (muscle weakness) and has difficulty sitting upright for long periods of time. Learn more.
