These were some of the emotions expressed at Match Day 2019, the celebratory event in which graduating medical students opened an envelope to learn which residency programs they will attend during the next phase of their training. Each year, fourth-year medical students across the country find out where they will begin their careers as doctors at a suspense-filled event known as Match Day. On Friday, March 15, NYU School of Medicine’s 178th class gathered with family, friends, and advisers at Riverpark in Manhattan, and learned their residency placement. Carla Velarde knew she wanted to stay in Rochester. She not only grew up here, and got her undergrad, master’s degree, and medical school education at the University of Rochester, but it’s also where she became a mother. Velarde delivered her son, Ben, during her third year of medical school in 2017. After an eight-month sabbatical, she returned to the program and completed her education. So when it came time to choose where she wanted to do her residency, she considered a number of top programs from around the country, but ultimately ranked the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital as her number one destination of choice. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Middletown: Touro Students use Sports to Combat Stress of Medical School
Kenneth Steier has been in his comfort zone for nearly four hours. It’s almost 9 a.m. on a Saturday, and the 60-year-old dean of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is crashing the boards, pulling up from deep and driving on helpless defenders more than half his age. After he swishes the game-winning 3-pointer to clinch a 15-1 victory, he lifts both index fingers in the air while backpedaling, then high-fives his teammates and opponents as he walks off the court. SUNY Upstate Medical University Student Wins Prestigious U.S. Public Health Service Award
Upstate Medical University medical student Sydney Russell Leed has received a 2019 U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Excellence in Public Health Award in recognition of her commitment and work to advance public health in communities and who exemplify the Public Health Service’s mission to protect, promote and advance the health and safety of our nation.
On behalf of the USPHS, Rear Admiral Michael Toedt, MD, chief medical officer of the Indian Health Service, presented the award to Russell Leed in a ceremony at the Health Sciences Library on the Upstate campus March 11. Learn more.

Weill Cornell Medicine: Dr. Manuel Hidalgo Named Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology
Dr. Manuel Hidalgo, a leading physician-scientist who specializes in pancreatic cancer and drug development, has been named chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the Weill Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective June 1.
