Statement from Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY) President Jo Wiederhorn about the Accreditation of New Medical School at CUNY
Kudos to Governor Cuomo on his announcement today about a new medical school to be located at the CUNY City College (CCNY) campus in Harlem.
CUNY School of Medicine at City College will help us train more doctors to fill the looming physician shortage. NYS is already the nation’s leader, with 10,418 students trained in the state’s 16 medical schools last year.
Better yet, the new CUNY School of Medicine at City College will build on CCNY’s Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education’s enduring dedication to providing opportunities to students traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
We are particularly thrilled about the expansion of the Sophie Davis School into a full medical college because of our long-standing partnership with Sophie David, focused on encouraging and supporting more diversity in medicine.
