2010 NYS Global Health Forum

Interprofessional collaboration will play an important role in mitigating the global health workforce crisis. It also has the potential to improve the quality of care through interprofessional systems-based training. While there have been many discussions to try and bridge the gap between the health professions and foster collaboration between global health “experts” from the schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health and social work, educational frameworks currently do not support interprofessional education. The development of shared global health curricula and competencies across the health professions is the focus of the 2010 NYS Global Health Forum.
The invited constituencies to the forum have grown since last year and currently represent the over 40 academic health professional schools in NYS, including, but not limited to: medicine, dentistry, public health, nursing, social work, psychology, information technology, and other allied health professions and partners.
Forum Goals and Objectives
The goal of the forum is to lay the foundation for resource sharing across health professional schools in the state and the development of NYS Global Health “Classrooms Without Walls”.
Toward this goal, the forum objectives are to:
—Promote, advance, and broaden awareness of the Global Health curricula in NYS schools;
—Develop Global Health competencies and assessment:
a. Specific to the health professions of medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, and mental health;
b. Across the professions, including competencies for working in interprofessional healthcare systems;
—Establish the framework for interinstitutional collaboration in sharing Global Health curricula across NYS schools, through break-out sessions focused on the curricular elements of: Assessment/Evaluation (of students/programs), Mentoring (of students/faculty), Experiential Learning, Information Technology, and NYS “Classrooms Without Walls”.
